San Jose Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio confirms run for Congress

SAN JOSE -- If there's ever a lone ranger on the City Council, you can be sure it's Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio. Often on the losing end of the council's 10-1 votes, Oliverio says he votes his conscience and follows his heart -- exactly what led him on an unexpected quest to run for Congress this year.
Oliverio, 46, confirmed plans to run for the 17th Congressional District against veteran Congressman Mike Honda on Monday, one of the state's most competitive races. It's a move even Oliverio's council colleagues didn't see coming.
But Oliverio says watching the "mudslinging" in the current race, namely between Honda, D-San Jose, and his most credible rival, Ro Khanna, inspired him to throw his name into the hat.
Oliverio, who spent nine years on the San Jose council, says voters need an alternative -- a fresh perspective from an "independent" candidate who doesn't play dirty tricks.
