Scuba Diver Miraculously Survives Horror Ride Through Nuclear Plant Intake Pipe

Source: yahoo news

A South Florida scuba diver was taken on a terrifying ride through a nuclear power plant's intake pipe that he feared would end in his watery death.

What started as a scuba and lobster-diving trip with family and friends became what felt like a ride to hell for Christopher Le Cun last summer when the 30-year-old swam up to what he says was an improperly marked intake pipe to a nuclear plant in Port St. Lucie.

For some five minutes back in July, Le Cun was pulled along at seven feet per second through a pitch black, barnacle-encrusted pipe with no idea what lay at the other end.

They were five minutes Le Cun said will forever be imprinted on his mind.

"We were looking for lobster when we came across a big structure," Le Cun, a Navy veteran who's been diving since age 12, told InsideEdition.com.

It's right offshore from an electric power plant. Obviously there will be cooling water intakes.

he was wearing GoPro. Then I realized that the movement in the video would probably make me sick.

Glad the guy is ok. Hopefully he doesn't grow pincers from the radiation.

This is the cooling system for the secondary (steam) system.

From Britannica:

The difference with this plant is it doesn't use cooling towers. It uses heat exchangers to cool the Condensers with ocean water.

and I am not gonna watch or read about the details... just the thought of that makes me cringe in such an awful way. I must have died that way in another life because I have nightmares about similar events.

I have had many a close call and to imagine some of them is just too much, to actually experience a scary close call... that leaves a mark on one's soul.

And now he gets to sue them?

And I'm sure he will claim lifelong trauma.

I am a bit skeptical.

Seems like any respectable power plant would have warnings posted, markers indicated, and some sort of screens on an intake pipe. If he got pulled in , what about the various crocs, gators, snakes, etc. ? The plant must have some safety filtering things in place.

From the link a spokesman from the plant stated:

"Nothing is more important safety at our St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plants, which is a reason that we have a protective over the intake piping. The diver intentionally swam into one of the intake pipes after bypassing a piece of equipment to minimize the entry of objects."

Sounds like a jerk that needs some attention
