Wife of Eagles' Randy Meisner Shot and Killed, Investigation Ongoing

Source: Rolling Stone

Lana Rae Meisner, the wife of Eagles co-founder and former bassist Randy Meisner, was shot and killed Sunday at the Studio City, California house the couple shared. The LAPD confirmed to Rolling Stone that a "death investigation" was being conducted at the 3700 block of Eureka Ave., which the New York Post reports is in the vicinity of the couple's home address.

According to CBS LA, a preliminary investigation into the shooting death at that location revealed the incident was not a homicide and the shooting appeared to be accidental. An investigator for the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner told Reuters that they are treating the death as an accident and confirmed the victim as Lana Meisner. As of Monday morning, no one has been detained or arrested

CNN reports that, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, investigators believe that a rifle accidentally discharged while being moved in a closet. "As she lifted the rifle in the case, another item within the case shifted and hit the trigger of the rifle causing it to fire and fatally injure Mrs. Meisner," the LAPD said in a statement, adding that Meisner "was cooperative throughout the investigation."

A representative for Meisner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meisner, who left the Eagles following the band's 1977 tour, had been married to his wife for nearly 20 years. The bassist is best known for co-writing and singing the Eagles' One of These Nights single "Take It to the Limit." Meisner, who was replaced in the Eagles by his one-time Poco band mate Timothy B. Schmit, last performed with the Eagles at the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1998.

I will take a gun with a single bullet.

Meisner was placed under court-ordered 24-hour supervision following a January 2015 incident where he allegedly threatened murder-suicide with an AK-47 and pills. In July 2015, Meisner's friend James Newton filed documents necessary to attain a temporary conservatorship over the former Eagles member, with Newton claiming Meisner was diagnosed as bipolar and suffered from "suicidal ideations."

Lana Rae Meisner, 63, called the cops around 5:30 p.m. to report a drunken man in their Studio City house. Police took a domestic violence report and left without incident.

But Randy Meisner, 69, called police about 90 minutes later, saying his wife had been shot, police said.

I hope the best CSI folks work on this case because it sure looks "Fugitive" level suspicious.

Really a suicide?
Perhaps a murder?

You do NOT store a firearm in a case with a round in the chamber and the hammer charged. Never ever.

A trigger lock goes through the trigger guard, and if it shifts, it can actually pull the trigger.

Not all trigger locks snugly fit all weapons. (An AK is pretty standard though.)

that's not an 'accidental discharge'.

Accident != did precisely what it was designed to do.

Ignition switches turn off as designed.

Air bags inflate as designed.

Can't stop a gun from accidentally discharging? Not if you don't have to!

operation.

The converse is true of a firearm. When you turn off the safety, chamber a round, charge the hammer, and pull the trigger, you expect it to fire. Failure to fire is a BAD thing in that condition.

Air bags should go off under certain g-force or crumple detection loads. Just like a gun should go off if you charge it, load a round in the chamber, turn off the safety, and pull the trigger.

Car makers have been successfully sued for vehicles stalling out, failing to run on the freeway, which is an unsafe condition. (Ford LTD, California, mid-80s)

A firearm failing to fire in that condition is also an unsafe condition. (Failure to operate as intended.)

I wonder if they can get Randy for criminal negligence?

This means he stored the rifle with a round in the chamber, the hammer cocked, and the safety off. That makes about as much sense as driving your car into your garage, and then getting out while the ignition is still on and the transmission is still in drive.
