Sanders camp fires back at Clinton for healthcare comments

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by tammywammy (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The Hill

"I don't know where he was when I was trying to get healthcare in '93 and '94," Clinton said, according to New York Times reporter Amy Chozick.

"Literally standing right behind her," Mike Casca tweeted with a photo of Clinton and Sanders during a speech on healthcare.

Others shared an image of a note from Clinton to Sanders thanking him for his "commitment to real health care."

She's pissed that he is giving her trouble because it is "her turn." I think all these insults she is throwing at him are much more petulant than they are vicious. The problem is that they add up and are destructive to both her credibility and any support she might want from Bernie supporters if she does win the nomination. Is is possible to disagree agreeably -- but apparently she reserves that for disagreements she has with Republicans.

Yes, Hillary was very gracious with thank you notes in 1993 to people who said they supported her or in Sanders' case, said they were "committed," but that does not confirm those people actually fought along side her when the going got tough in 1994. I was around in 1993 and 1994. I remember Hillary being brutalized with TV ads run by the insurance companies. I don't remember Sanders defending her on TV or fighting back against the anti-Hillarycare propaganda onslaught. Maybe you have a link?

"In February, Sanders requested a meeting with Hillary, “to bring in two Harvard Medical School physicians who have written on the Canadian system,” according to the records of the administration’s task force. Those physicians were Stephanie Woolhandler and David Himmelstein, leading advocates for single-payer health care. They got their meeting at the White House that month, and the two doctors laid out the case for single-payer to the first lady. “She said, ‘You make a convincing case, but is there any force on the face of the earth that could counter the hundreds of millions of the dollars the insurance industry would spend fighting that?’” recalled Himmelstein. “And I said, “How about the president of the United States actually leading the American people?’ and she said, ‘Tell me something real.' Hillary Clinton’s Single-Payer Pivot Greased By Millions in Industry Speech Fees

Hillary Clinton’s sudden attack on Bernie Sanders’ single-payer health care plan is a dramatic break with Democratic Party doctrine that the problem with single-payer is that it is politically implausible — not that it is a bad idea.

Single-payer, the Canadian-style system in which the government pays for universal health care, takes the health insurance industry out of the picture, saving huge amounts of money. But the health insurance industry has become so rich and powerful that it would never let it happen.

That was certainly Clinton’s position back in the early 1990s, when she was developing her doomed universal coverage proposal for her husband, Bill.

But in the ensuing years, both Clintons have taken millions of dollars in speaking fees from the health care industry. According to public disclosures, Hillary Clinton alone, from 2013 to 2015, made $2,847,000 from 13 paid speeches to the industry.

Hillary Clinton’s Single-Payer Pivot Greased By Millions in Industry Speech Fees

Democratic Debate 2015: Hillary Clinton’s ‘Enemies’ In Pharmaceutical and Insurance Industries Have Supported Her Campaigns, Foundation

In 2008, Clinton was the among the three biggest recipients of campaign cash from pharmaceutical-related companies, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. In all, the watchdog group reports that she raised $738,000 from employees of pharmaceutical manufacturers and companies classified as “Pharmaceuticals /Health Products.” The center reports that Clinton also raised more than $1.2 million from the insurance industry -- which includes health insurers.

On top of those campaign contributions, the Clintons and their family foundation have benefited from their ties to the pharmaceutical and insurance industries.

In 2011, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) -- the primary trade association representing drug companies -- paid Bill Clinton $200,000 for a speech, as the organization was lobbying the Hillary Clinton-led State Department. Last year, the Drug Chemical and Associated Technologies Association, a trade group whose members include major pharmaceutical companies, paid her a $250,000 speaking fee.

Meanwhile, the Clinton Foundation has received between $1 million and $5 million worth of donations separately from drug manufacturers Pfizer and Procter & Gamble, and from health insurers Humana and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. Some of those companies made donations as recently as this year, according to the foundation’s website.

That largesse was part of a friendship forged after those industries opposed her 1993 health care initiative -- and which continued after she won reelection to the Senate in 2006.

Here is her surrogate Dolores Huerta when asked about Ted's endorsement of Obama: " Hillary Clinton voted against the nuclear waste dumping in Yucca Mountain in Nevada, while on the other hand Barack Obama actually took money from the company that was creating the nuclear waste and wanted to dump it in Nevada. So, you know, I think that that pretty much offsets Ted Kennedy’s endorsement, because you’ve got Robert Kennedy’s children — of course, the farm workers’ union, we were much more closer to Robert, and these are the activists. These are the ones that are out there doing community work, and that they know what Hillary has done in terms of her long history in civil rights, in working for children, working for education. You know, so they know that she’s the one that they feel is the best person to run for president."
http://www.democracynow.org/2008/2/1/democratic_presidential_nomination_could_hinge_on

So what? This year Ted's no longer in bed with nuke waste dumping? I mean, it was Bobby who was really close to the Farm Workers.....

who wants to get on TV to defend the First Lady can? It doesn't work that way. Many MOCs get very little press despite Herculean efforts of their communications staff, particularly in 1993-94, when there weren't so many 24 hour news channels (e.g., no MSNBC, no Fox).

On a more important note, "fighting for affordable healthcare" never has been limited to "defending Hillary Clinton." Most of it means people taking a leadership role in Congress and supporting legal reforms.

If you want to know what Bernie Sanders was doing in 1993-94, try looking at this list of bills he introduced. I find it pretty impressive:

Hillary is ‘often confused,’ says trusted aide Huma in fresh emails

https://theintercept.com/2016/01/16/in-1993-meeting-hillary-clinton-acknowledged-convincing-case-for-single-payer/

In one email exchange on Jan. 26, 2013, Abedin asks fellow staffer Monica Hanley whether Clinton knows to call Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Hanley replies: “She was in bed for a nap by the time I heard that she had an 8am call. Will go over with her.” Abedin stresses the importance of reviewing the schedule with Clinton: “Very imp to do that. She’s often confused.”

It’s not the first time the word “confused” has been used to describe the Democratic presidential front-runner and former top diplomat. Clinton herself admits she gets confused and even apologizes to her staff for mix-ups while she was secretary of state On May 31, 2010, Clinton emailed Abedin on the timing of her meetings and travel schedule. After a back-and-forth over the time, she writes: “Ok but I’m confused since I remember talking w Lona about changing to 8 tonight.”

On Sept. 23, 2009, Clinton is emailing with chief of staff Cheryl Mills about an upcoming State Department senior leadership retreat. After reviewing the draft agenda, Clinton was thrown by whether Deputy Secretary of State Jim Steinberg would be there for an earlier presentation. “I’m confused–will he be there in am? Can he be urged to reschedule whatever else he has and come?”

“Huma Abedin’s description of Hillary Clinton as ‘easily confused’ tells you all you need to know why it took a federal lawsuit to get these government emails from Clinton’s illegal email server,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton said in a statement.
In emails Clinton turned over herself to the State Department, she apologizes several times for confusing her staff. The emails show how Clinton, who is often perceived as polished and rehearsed, makes mistakes when emailing about foreign affairs.

A day earlier, Dec. 12, 2009, Clinton apologized for confusing Guinea and Morocco in an email. She sends a note to three staffers, including Assistant Secretary of State Jeffrey Feltman. “Good catch, Jeff! Yes–two issues. there will be a contact group about Guinea that the French want us to be strong on too. Sorry for the confusion.”
