Arizona man found guilty in 'Draw Mohammed' event shooting

Source: Reuters

An Arizona man was found guilty on Thursday of plotting with others to attack a "Draw Mohammed" cartoon contest in Texas last year and providing material support to the Islamic State group, prosecutors said.

Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem, 44, was convicted on all five charges against him by a federal jury in U.S. District Court in Phoenix stemming from the May 3 attack in the Dallas suburb of Garland that left his two alleged associates dead in a shoot-out with police.

The case against Kareem, also known as Decarus Thomas, was the first Islamic State-related prosecution to reach trial of the dozens brought by the federal government across the nation. It is the second jury verdict in such a case, as U.S. Air Force veteran Tairod Pugh was convicted earlier this month in New York.

"This verdict sends a strong message to those who support terrorists," acting special agent in charge of the FBI's Phoenix division, Justin Tolomeo, said in a statement.

4. A 'Draw Mohammed' contest, in Texas ... really?

Although it's pretty well-known that 'images' of Mohammed are considered sacreligious (sp?) to Muslims, some idiots in (of course) Texas decided it was a good idea to have a 'Draw Mohammed' Contest?

REALLY?

Not saying this Kareem doesn't deserve a lengthy sentence or anything (because religion gives you no excuse for friggin ANYTHING in my book), but ... c'mon Texas. How stupid can you be? Oh, herpty derp, lets have us a "Draw Mohammed" contest! Oh, and DERP!

You people that put this on are still fucking morons. Maybe not as much as Kareem, but ... close, really.

When liberals have zero problem with art exhibits like Piss Christ, it's the height of hypocrisy to call these people with free speech just as bad as murderers. We are under no obligation to cater to anyone's religious taboos.

7. For the record, the art exhibit you're describing is just as stupid as a Draw Mohammed contest

Obviously first amendment protected and not deserving being shot at over, but still stupid

(and we disagree on that on whether either one is stupid) but equating it with a murder is ridiculous.

10. Agreed, but then again, no one *equated* the art with murder

We also have to do that whole "read carefully" and "don't project meanings onto other peoples' words" stuff.

13. Like I said "read closely" and "don't project"

Read closely -
"Maybe not as much as Kareem, but ... close, really"

Don't project -
Saying something is "as stupid as murder" is not in any way saying "as bad as murder". Sorry, but you'd have to want to read that meaning into it in order to make that leap

Anyway, when you were in high school, your English teacher taught you about a thing called "hyperbole". Remember that? That's when someone says "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life" or "your puns are killing me" they don't mean those things literally. It's a common language device. It means that people who get worked up when someone else calls xenophobes who bait nascent terrorists "as dumb as the terrorists" are the biggest idiots on earth*

(* for the literal minded: "biggest idiots on earth" is also hyperbole)

Her whole thing is Muslims are violent terrorists. She put on this event, hoping something would happen. And these idiots obliged her.
I'm a first amendment absolutist. And that leaves me free to call everyone involved in the event and the attack an idiot.

8. It is free speech, like when kkk march around or 'someone' makes a picture with gun target on it...

But I agree with you, that crappy-type 'free speech' will draw 'extremist flies'.

Perhaps what some of those who have these type of 'free speech events' want- is to draw flies, attract violence?

15. It's every bit as legitimate as the anti-Jewish, anti-Christian stuff. IMO, your opinion

is only not hypocritical or not cowardly if you also want to suppress stuff like Piss-Christ, the chocolate Jesus sculpture, and all the anti-Jewish stuff.

But I am guessing you defend that other stuff. I am guessing you don't want to live in any type of theocracy.

And drawing a parallel between attempted murder and cartoons is just bizarre, in my book.

The idea that you can't is wacky religious nonsense. There is nothing wrong with what they did. There is also nothing wrong with burning the Koran.

On the other hand, the people that organized this event would probably want a double standard for Christianity. All religions are equally ridiculous.

And if someone, somewhere that some Muslins find offense, then clearly numerous violence-prone Muslims are guaranteed to attack. That's what you're saying, right?

Because that's what I'm hearing when you say that "contests" like this are a dumb idea because they might offend people in a different religion.

I don't give a shit about what offends someone's silly religious beliefs, and responding with violence is not acceptable even if you don't personally like the organizers.

18. Why run a depict Muhammed contest when Muslims have done it so well for centuries already?

Of course also why object to a depict Muhammed contest when Muslims have done it so well for centuries already?
