Idaho mulls Shariah law bill 1 year after high-profile vote
Source: AP
BOISE, Idaho (AP) Amid growing concerns about Muslim immigration, state lawmakers Thursday advanced legislation prohibiting Shariah law or any other foreign statutes from influencing Idaho courts. But the bill's future remains uncertain.
Lawmakers are considering the measure despite drawing criticism last year when they rejected an international treaty that made it easier for single parents worldwide to collect child-support payments. The measure was designed to align Idaho's child support laws with those outlined in federal statute, but it drew suspicion from Republicans who worried about the influences of Shariah law in child support cases.
However, under mounting pressure, lawmakers reversed their decision in a special session that cost taxpayers thousands.
The latest bill would keep Idaho courts and government agencies from basing rulings on foreign laws that don't supply the same rights guaranteed in the U.S. and state constitutions.

(1,178 posts)After all, I can't think of a more likely place on earth for imposition of Sharia law than Idaho. I did a bit of research and there are a startling 6 (count 'em, 6!!) mosques in the entire state. Next thing you know, there will be 7, and then Christianity will be banned, all women will be forced to wear burqas, and ISIS will start running training camps in Pocatello. Instead of American foods like the famed Mormon Pretzel Jello Salad (Idaho is about 25% LDS), people will be forced to eat healthy diets of grilled eggplant, green salads, hummus, and falafel. It is a slippery slope, people of Idaho. You are commended for your brave stand against .5% of your population.

(564 posts)if they so choose. No one should be able to forcibly impose any religious law upon someone else in America. Islam is no more exempt from this than Christianity.

(17,656 posts)It's bizzaro world here sometimes.
One representative the GOP sent to Congress a few years ago preached that women who had abortions increased the risk they would face for getting breast cancer.
The only way we got rid of that guy was to run a middle-of-the-road DINO against him in the next election.
Even some Republicans were embarrassed by him.
Unfortunately, the Republicans struck back 2 years later and they got a fire-breathing hypocrite to beat the DINO.

(1,178 posts)To apologize for the douchebaggery of Republicans! They are the "party of personal responsibility, " after all, so they can take responsibility for their own idiocy. I'm sure there is quite a nice community of sane Idahoans like yourself who have to deal with this on a daily basis- best of luck to you!
