Brussels raids: Paris attack suspect Abdeslam 'surrounded'

Source: BBC

Paris suspect Salah Abdeslam has been surrounded and wounded in an anti-terror police raid in Brussels, local media say.

This has not been officially confirmed. Shots were earlier heard in the Molenbeek area of Belgian's capital.

Belgian PM Charles Michel had to urgently leave an EU-Turkey summit in Brussels, a BBC reporter says.

Abdeslam is a key suspect in last year's Paris attacks in which 130 people died.

His fingerprints were found in a Brussels flat raided on Tuesday.

Abdeslam, a French national born in Brussels, had lived in Molenbeek before the 13 November attacks.

He has been the subject of a massive manhunt since the attacks, claimed by militants from the so-called Islamic State group.

'We got him!': Police capture world's most wanted man as ISIS fugitive behind Paris attacks is shot in raid on Brussels hideout

Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam has been shot and arrested in a police raid in the Molenbeek area of Brussels, after four months on the run and an international manhunt.

French president François Hollande earlier said an operation was under way in Brussels linked to the Paris attacks. Gunshots and explosions were heard in the Molenbeek area.

Despite Abdeslam's arrest, the police operation was continuing this evening. There are reports that drones are being used to hunt further targets.

They want to know about the leads, most people think it may have something to do with the stolen IS files. Personally I don't want to know, not yet anyway. I don't want anything said that could tip some terrorists the wink.

Abdeslam shot in the leg - Molenbeek deputy mayor

Posted at 8:08

Ahmed El Khannouss, the deputy mayor of Molenbeek, says he's received confirmation from the Belgian federal prosecutor's office that Abdeslam was shot in the leg and detained.

Mr El Khannouss told the Associated Press that police are still searching for one person who is holed up in a house in the suburb.

He told i-Tele television earlier that there are two schools a few dozen metres from the ongoing police operation, and authorities have taken measures to secure the schools and local residents.

Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam has been wounded and arrested in a dramatic raid in Brussels after four months on the run.

Another man arrested, Monir Ahmed Alaaj, was also on a wanted list, Belgian prosecutors said.

Three members of a family accused of harbouring Abdeslam have also been detained.

French President Francois Hollande said he expected Abdeslam to be extradited to France "as rapidly as possible".

It's a reference to torture in Conan. We don't have that here. We used to have a set of gallows in London known as the Tyburn Tree, but we did away with capital punishment.

What we have is criminals looking increasingly pathetic and ridiculous when they complain about their treatment. Nothing of any use propaganda wise. Anders Breivik is claiming he's being tortured because of isolation. What a wuss.

This is his cell.

Do you think this Nazi is going to inspire any more right wing terrorists with his whinging?

Self styled martyrs become a bit less fervent when they realise they're not going to be transported to paradise in a blaze of glory but they're going to spend the rest of their lives stuck in a cell and their dependents could end up being deported. Once they see the reality things change, unless someone starts torturing them then they'll say whatever the torturer wants to hear. It's good that they were captured in Europe.

They had no idea this asshole was even in Brussels, reports say they thought he fled to Syria. That said a evil fuck like this is a poster child for the death penalty on so many levels, he killed so many innocent men, women, and children.

We don't want to start creating martyrs. Guantanamo Bay did wonders for IS's propaganda machine. That's a trap we don't want to fall into.
