"Locust" parents shove, steal kids' candy at Easter egg hunt

Source: CBS News

ORANGE, Conn. - An Easter egg hunt in southern Connecticut turned into a shoving match after pushy parents ignored the rules.

Saturday's event at the Pez Visitor Center in Orange drew hundreds of people, some of whom didn't wait for the starting time, overwhelming Pez employees staffing the event.

Pez General Manager Shawn Peterson told CBS affiliate WFSB-TV that people "rushed the field and took everything."

Event organizers placed more than 9,000 eggs on three fields with the intention of having staggered start times for each age group.

I have never understood this kind of event. When my kids were very little, we got invited to an egg hunt. I thought it would be an egg hunt like the kind we did as kids where the eggs are actually hidden around a park. But no, the eggs were simply layered out onto a grassy field and the kids ran like Black Friday shoppers grabbing everything in sight, even right out from a toddler. My kids just stood there.

Never again.

I very much hope someone or more than one person will be willing to share the pictures of all those wonderful American parents. Shame is the only recourse left.

I read an article years back about an Easter Egg hunt about 10 years after the Civil War, and parents were even worse there.

They caused a riot. Literally.

It's human nature that there will be stupid people doing stupid things.

Over PEZ? I never got that.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

The last verse at http://www.artofeurope.com/larkin/lar2.htm

'Course, most of what parents do doesn't make the papers like this...

Does anyone know what was in the eggs? I assume it was mostly candy, but if there were PEZ dispensers in any of those eggs, that could have contributed to the scrum. I know several PEZ dispenser collectors - they're good and decent people, but they've told me of a few fellow collectors who wouldn't think twice about pushing a 5-year-old aside to grab a dispenser.

collects those. She made good money selling her duplicate dispensers on e bay, took that money and bought a display rack for the dispensers she kept.

It's an awesome day trip if you're nearby. Every Pez dispenser ever made, including super-rare and solid gold dispensers. It's really cool, with big picture windows onto the production floor. $5 to enter, but they credit it back to you if you buy something from the store. Just don't go on Easter!
