Australia's Great Barrier Reef hit by 'worst' bleaching

Source: BBC

Evidence that Australia's Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its worst coral bleaching on record has renewed calls for the UN to list it as "in-danger".

The National Coral Bleaching Taskforce says 95% of reefs from Cairns to Papua New Guinea are now severely bleached.

It says only four reefs out of 520 have no evidence of bleaching.

Unesco voted not to put the reef on its World Heritage in Danger list last year, but green groups want the decision reassessed.

It is beyond comprehension to me that the only form of confirmed sentient life we have found in the universe - ourselves - is the same malevolent force that will doom us to extinction before the species has a chance to hit its potential.

It makes me angry and sad in a way that penetrates my very soul...we had the power and innovation to make this go another way 35-40 years ago and instead we collectively chose Reaganomics, Cold War hysteria and pure unvarnished greed to turn away from the problem, to put off solutions, to allow profiteers and criminals to "get rich" while the planet's resources were drawn down.

Fuck humanity, the Earth and life in general will be better served when we are gone. Maybe the next go around of intelligence will find ancient remnants of us and think "Holy Shit! we don't want THAT outcome again!"...maybe...or maybe we can't find life elsewhere in the universe because it is a repeating loop of civilizations and intelligence that can only arise so high before it is laid low by the base nature of evolved organisms...I don't know, but I do know we have lost the chances to prevent climate change's nastiest little presents...its just a matter of time until they all arrive.
