Russia backs Assad's departure 'if that is what Syrians want'
Source: The Guardian
Russia has indicated that it will no longer stand in the way of the departure of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad if that is what Syrians want.
The comments by Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov come despite Russia's insistence that there should be no external intervention in the escalating Syrian conflict.
While the Russian remarks remain obscure on how that political transition might be achieved, they suggest a weakening of Moscow's backing for Assad in the midst of growing international calls for his departure.

(27,137 posts)...from their former iteration as a country. Because ever since the 'fall of the wall' they came to realize that they can still be autocratic enough to boss most of the people around and still make claims that they're a democracy at the same time. Sort of like how we've evolve from the opposite direction here in the US. And apparently Commissar Putin doesn't like all the blood splatter that standing this close to Bashar "no-chin" al-Assad, is getting all over his clothes. Bashar is just so uncouth. No sophistication whatsoever.
On the other hand though there are the Chinese. They're a whole different story. They have no qualms over a government killing its people.......
.....especially if those people get in their way, or if they have the temerity to embarrass them with out-of-the-box levels of corruption (melamine anyone?) -- particularly while they're trying to show-off to the rest of us what a great thing capitacommunism is. Which is why the next great revolution will most likely happen there. And the people will likely repeat the politburo's excesses for bloodletting. Except this time it'll be more deserved.
