Woman Accused of Kidnapping Baby at Mall

Source: ABC News

The incident began when Amoore "struck up" a conversation with the baby's mother and her family at the mall, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said today. The mother says Amoore then followed them to the food court.

While Ahsir's mother helped her older son, Amoore asked if she could pick up the baby, but Ahsir's mother said no, according to the affidavit. Ahsir then started to cry and "Amoore stood up from the table and took the baby from his stroller and was trying to console him," the affidavit states.

"The mother said she was distracted by the other children and looked away momentarily to reach into her diaper bag and when she turned back Amoore ran off with the baby," the affidavit states. "The mother started to chase after her, but lost sight of her when she turned back to check on her other son who was still at the table."

I was home with my 3-month old daughter in 1986 when Baby Phillip was abducted from a nearby hospital. Back then there was virtually no security in hospitals, and the kidnapper wore scrubs and pretended to be a maternity nurse. Apparently she had told her boyfriend that she was pregnant, and she stole a baby to prove it when he was released from prison. Thankfully her neighbors (in Baltimore) heard about the abduction on the news, put the story together and contacted police. I cried my eyes out, feeding my own newborn and thinking of Phillip's mother. He was returned to his parents safely.
Baby Phillip is why hospitals have the matching bracelets and other security measures in maternity units now.

The abductor's mother is a prominent (black) Republican in the PA State GOP organization, and is Deputy Chair of the Republican Party here in PA. I know she has been very politically active in the Philly metro area for a long time and is frequently a guest on, or hosted shows on the black talk radio station here (her focus has mainly been on business).

We had an Amber alert when this happened. It popped up on my cellphone; something I had never seen before.

It's all around a very sad story. The woman had given birth several weeks ago and her baby had died shortly after birth. She says that it felt like she was holding her own child again and that she lost control of herself.

I'm certainly not defending what the woman did but it sounds like she may be suffering some kind of mental illness since the death of her child.
