The Associated Press

AUBURN, Ala. —

The police chief in the Alabama city of Auburn said early Sunday in a report that authorities have responded to a report of multiple gunshot victims at an apartment complex, but he gave no information on the situation.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson told the Opelika-Auburn News that police responded to a report of multiple shooting victims Saturday night but he had no initial comment on the situation nor would he circumstances involved or whether anyone was in custody.

The newspaper reported that emergency vehicles had converged on the University Heights apartment complex where a number of students attending Auburn University reside.

An Auburn police dispatcher contacted by The Associated Press said early Sunday she had no immediate information to release. Police did not immediately return repeated messages seeking comment and the dispatcher later said she did not know when authorities would publicly release information.

Turquorius Vines, 23, said he was at the pool party Saturday evening at the University Heights apartments with one of his friends. He said he and his friend were approached by two other men who started arguing with them over a woman.

Vines said he punched one of the men, while his friend hit both of the men over the head with a bottle. Either one or both of the two men then started shooting, he said. He said his friend was shot and killed, while two others also were hit by gunfire. Vines said he had never before seen the men who he had been arguing with.

"It's like I lost a lung," Vines said of his friend. "I don't know how I'm going to survive this."

Several emergency vehicles had converged overnight around the University Heights apartment complex where reports indicated a number of students who attend Auburn University typically reside. The building was swathed in yellow police tape.

and the shooter was responding to a lethal threat. (Yes, hitting people in the head with bottles can be lethal, as well as the resulting broken glass parts.)

But the story/evidence is still pretty sketchy at this point, it may well have occured rather differently.

more sensible gun regulations are coming: probably in the next forty years or so this silly fetish with handguns we allow gumps to indulge in will come to an end. In the meantime, we'll keep getting stories like this, daily.

No doubt you would make exceptions for guns in the hands of certain government employees.

Two arrested, one at large in Alabama shooting deaths

By Tom Bassing
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama | Mon Jun 11, 2012 7:04pm EDT

(Reuters) - Police have arrested two men in connection with Saturday night's shootings in Auburn, Alabama, that killed three men and wounded three others, but the prime suspect remained at large despite a manhunt by state, local and federal authorities, officials said on Monday.

The shootings followed an argument at a pool party and killed two former members of the Auburn University football team and wounded a current member of the team.

The FBI, U.S. marshals, state troopers and police from Auburn and Montgomery launched a manhunt for the prime suspect, Desmonte Leonard, 22, who has been charged with three counts of capital murder.

The two men under arrest, Gabriel Thomas, 41, and Jeremy Thomas, 18, were charged with hindering prosecution. Police in Montgomery, where they were arrested, said they had yet to determine if the two men are related.
