Dozens of Democracy Spring protesters have been arrested on the steps of the US Capitol. Thousands of activists arrived in Washington DC, after a 10-day, 140-mile (225km) march from Philadelphias Liberty Bell, to protest the role of money in politics.
People are fed up with the system, they are fed up with the corruption, and we want free and fair elections, Cenk Uygur, host of the TV show Young Turks and one of the participants in the protest, told RT. This is our core American right.
The fight begins today. It doesnt mean we win today. But in the end, we always win, Uygur said. Progressives have never lost. We won in civil rights, we won in womens rights, we won in gay rights, and were going to win in getting our democracy back.
Attendees are being asked and trained to be non-violent protesters with guidelines that include no destruction or damage of property, no weapons or any means of physical defense, including shields, and no masks or other ways to conceal identity.

Precious little mainstream media coverage of this, even though the police have arrested so many at the Capitol that they're running out of space. Apparently there's been some chanting of "Where's CNN?"

(845 posts)On Capitol grounds (at least outside, if you disrupt Congress it's an immediate arrest) they have to purposely want to be arrested while protesting. They are given 3 verbal warnings with the last one being a 'this is your last chance' kind of deal.
It's all very structured.

Yes, it's civil disobedience. Yes, they are doing it to raise awareness.
None of these people are surprised about their outcome. They've all come to be arrested for peaceful civil disobedience.
You've got issues, congrats on finding the Internet. Perpetual anger and an unlimited number of people to argue with.
This is ridiculous. Go pick a fight with somebody else.

(1,166 posts)If it's not reported by the corporate gatekeepers, it didn't happen. 20 years ago 100 people getting arrested in a DC protest would make the news, no question. I wish thousands would pour out of homes in DC and get down there to be arrested as well until so many are arrested that the issue they are protesting has to be reported. Hope Bernie will talk about this in subsequent rallies and interviews. Funny that right now economic "stability" is hanging on by a mere thread. International economists have been predicting for months that we've got another big and sudden economic dump to look forward to in the coming year, after the elections, of course. (Meanwhile, Huffington Posts reports, yet again, on a female celebrity photographed in a bikini.)

(8,685 posts)Can really be petty and condescending and racist when it comes to people that don't support their candidate.
Why?
The fact is that most would read that story and get out of it that everyone waiting for that flight, including Cenk and any other rational human being, was pissed off for the 4-hour flight delay and no plane or reasonable information why coming and Cenk being booted from that flight because the "captain wasn't comfortable" has a very racially profiling-ish vibe to it. Even if it was not his Arab-like appearance, he is a person of color that has spoken about these type of experiences before now.
This nonstop vitriol toward Sanders and people that support Sanders has ran off the road, gone over the cliff and is now in an uncontrollable slide into the valley of batshit crazy.

(135,425 posts)The plane captain is the absolute authority as to who rides and who gets the door shut in his face.
And bullying crew and employees sounds like a good reason to deny an asshole a ride.

(11 posts)Actually, 12,000 were present and there were over 400 arrests.
There would have been more, but the Capitol police ran out of room at the jail and out of vehicles to transport them.
Not a single lawmaker came outside to talk to the crowd. That's alright...they deserve to be afraid.
BTW, this will go on until April 18th.

(845 posts)That would be the Park Police. The Capitol Police are simply the police for the legislative branch just like the Executive Branch has the Secret Service.
There's more cops and agencies in this town than you can count.

(704 posts)no one cares.
It's sad really. It's sad that these people had to get arrested to get five seconds of air time to spotlight a crucial subject that every American should care about.
They don't know and don't care. They THINK they know--but they don't know at all how infected the system is with corrupt influence.
They don't even know--or care how they subsidize some of these things.
They don't care.
That is very frustrating. But to these fine Americans--men and women who do care--I say thank you.

(2,388 posts)Police arrested more than 400 protesters outside the U.S. Capitol on Monday from Democracy Spring, an organization seeking to remove big money from politics and combat restrictive voter identification laws.
The mostly calm and orderly demonstration resulted in arrests for what the U.S. Capitol Police called "unlawful demonstration activity" such as crowding and obstruction.
Organizers vowed to repeat the demonstration every day for a week.
The protest was held "to demand Congress take immediate action to end the corruption of big money in our politics and ensure free and fair elections," Democracy Spring said on its website.
The group lists actor Mark Ruffalo and academic Noam Chomsky and dozens of well-known activist groups among its supporters.
"We believe this is the people's house, and Congress should be responsive to the people. We need to protect voting rights," said Peter Callahan, the group's communications coordinator.
Protesters hoisted a scarecrow-like effigy of a corporate lobbyist holding money bags and a sign reading, "Warning: Massive civil disobedience is next."
