Clinton team looking for a VP who will be fighter, excite Sanders supporters

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by etherealtruth (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: USA Today

Hillary Clinton is considering a running mate who could make a direct appeal to supporters of Bernie Sanders, bridging a generational and political divide, according to four people close to the campaign.... The campaign’s vetting also prioritizes demographics over someone from a key swing state as she seeks to unify the Democratic voting base, said the individuals coordinating with the campaign, who were not authorized to speak on the record about early deliberations.... One obvious candidate who would fit the Sanders anti-Wall Street populist profile is Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts senator who’s been in a Twitter war with Republican Donald Trump. Her tweetstorm during the past week shows she’s capable of being the kind of scrappy surrogate Clinton needs to take him on.... If Warren is not the pick, the hope is to choose someone who would both appeal to a younger demographic of the party that is identifying as independent and to the left of Clinton.

“We’re no longer playing the Bill Clinton-era win-the-middle, win-the-Reagan-Democrats presidential election politics,” said Jamal Simmons, a Democratic strategist who worked in Bill Clinton’s administration. “People have gone to their corners, and you’re wearing a red jersey or a blue jersey. The question is, can you get enough blue jerseys to show up? That’s your first test.”

“I don’t think she’s going to pick anybody who isn’t progressive,” said Bob Shrum, who has served as a senior aide to Democratic presidential candidates Al Gore and John Kerry. ...Others who may be interested include:
-- Rep. Xavier Becerra, the highest-ranking Latino in Congress and House Democratic Caucus Chairman, campaigned for Clinton in a dozen states and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
-- Sen. Chris Murphy, of Connecticut, billed himself during his campaign as a "fresh, progressive voice."
-- Labor Secretary Tom Perez is popular with labor unions and spent years working on voting and civil rights issues.

I'm still hopeful of Sanders' performance in the remaining contests, but if it is Hillary, please don't pick a 2016 version of Joe Lieberman. Please show that you have learned from the Carter-Reagan, Gore-Bush, and Kerry-Bush campaign fiascoes.

Response to Attorney in Texas (Original post)

1. Why the fuck would a VP excite me?

So I could feel all warm and fuzzy about the person who goes to dinners and funerals and such?

Like Hillary gives a shit about whatever the VP represents? Her VP would just be a pandering thing - she may as well go ahead and pander to some demographic or whatever.

I sincerely hope she does not pluck Warren out of the Senate, to use for votes and then relegate to photo ops and Kennedy Center honors, etc. Which would suit Hillary and the Third Way just fine, of course.

5. If Warren accepts...

Her credibility on the issues she has championed is gone.

10. Yes, it would be a way of getting a gadfly out of the Senate

But I hope she doesn't accept, if asked, because we need someone who is going to criticize Clinton from the left because she will need it.

9. I'm looking for Sanders at the top of the ticket, but Hillary-Warren would be a hell of a lot better

than Hillary-Sandoval.

2. If Clinton is the nominee,

It will be a cold day in hell before she ever picks a running mate who would 'excite'me.

The problem being, of course, that Clinton herself would be at the top of the
'T I C K E T...'

What's a ticket? A ticket usually gets you something....

4. So they are looking for an old Jewish man with white bushy hair?

I don't see them as thinking deep enough for the progressive part as they see HRC as very progressive now. Whatever in the hell they mean about it.

I think they will see Bernies popularity as the aging grandfather type and that is what is attracting everyone to him. They do not seem to be deep thinkers over there.

6. Hillary will need disaffected Republicans to win in the swing states.

Her VP pick will be a younger male, but nowhere near an actual Liberal or Progressive.

Another New Democrat, beholden to Big Money and giving lip service to actual Democratic ideals.

Most likely a youngish, white male. And yes Third Way neo-liberal.

17. It will be someone ambitious and easily bought off by the promises of future power.

Too bad the next generation of Democratic voters are already shifting away from the current corrupt party structure, the guy picked for that vp slot is going to be forever tainted as a willing tool.

Obviously he'd never run as her VP, but hopefully she won't even bother considering him - she can do better than the Senator from Vermont.

You call yourself a "lefty" but support the conservative Democrat. So, you must be left handed.

You have a peace sign, yet you support the War Hawk candidate, you must be confused.

18. So she should pick a garden slug who angers Sanders supporters?

Seriously... these knee-jerk reactions are ridiculous.

I would love an outspoken progressive VP, and, more importantly, the Senate needs the extra progressive vote.

19. The VP will be a leading candidate for the next presidency

so I would be shocked if they picked someone progressive. I expect someone who is every bit as moderate as Clinton or Obama but who provides some help in getting the votes of either a particular community or particular swing states. I expect this person to be a non-white male, likely Latino but African-American possible. Personally, the only reason I would vote for Hillary is because she is the "less worse" of the two candidates. The only thing that would change with the choice of a progressive VP is that I would remove the clothespin on my nose while voting for her and use my fingers instead.

20. Clinton and her supporters show again that they are clueless about this election.

The people who support Bernie Sanders are not interested in a faux progressive or a surrogate progressive in a largely ceremonial position in a business-as-usual administration.

Moreover, why should any Bernie supporters trust anything Clinton and her supporters promise them after the contemptuous way they have treated Bernie and his supporters as epitomized in the Nevada primary election?

Emanuel would be a perfect match for her. They would make a great Neocon Team to carry out the Project for the New American Century. We would be able to take over the entire Middle East, kill them all and grab those resources!

She's likely to pick another centrist/DLCer/tool of Wall Street, most of whom are as non-enthusiasm-inspiring as she is. Tim Kaine, for example.

It's as if these idiots think she is going to win the general. She can't even win the primary without cheating against an honest man. She is doomed against Trump.

29. The only exciting thing would be seeing her campaign end...

...or seeing her lose in the general. I want no part of her toxic campaign. The racist campaign she ran against Obama never really ended. She decided to bring in Sidney Blumenthal against Barack's wishes as she basically said "fuck you" to him letting Blumenthal stovepipe foreign intelligence into the State Dept. She brings trouble and scandal everywhere she goes, and when she goes down it will be a beautiful thing. Oh, and all the vociferous supporters here who have been disrespectful, condescending and combative in defense of the worst candidate the party has ever forced on us can take a flying leap. You've all been just awful and you've sucked the life out of this place for the better part of the past year.
