McConnell Declares 'No Serious Barriers To Voting Anymore Anywhere In America'

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) dismissed the efforts to restore the Voting Rights Act after it was gutted by 2013 Supreme Court decision.
A lot of this in my view doesnt have anything to do with anything other than their estimation of what would give them an electoral advantage, McConnell told USA Today, suggesting the efforts were motivated by Democratic partisanship. Its not really about knocking down barriers. There are no serious barriers to voting anymore anywhere in America.
Nevertheless, McConnell told USA Today that he agreed with the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder. The ruling invalidated the formula in the law that determined which states, based on their history of racist election procedures, were required to get federal approval for any changes in voting regulations.
Since the decision, there's been a slew of restrictive voting laws passed by states previously covered by the provision, many of which are now being challenged in court.

(43,129 posts)Sounds like something is eating at his sorry soul.
Might I suggest ... The place they don't vote, Senator McConnell, is in the Senate
on the President's Supreme Court nominees.
This is subliminal political cover. GOP often twists and turns an issue and resurfaces
it elsewhere in another context, all giving themselves cover on the issue. We don't have
to worry about not voting, everyone votes, remember?
McConnell and his Senate GOP Court Dodgers!

(43,890 posts)if the barriers generated an electoral disadvantage to begin with.
Mitch should have no fear of removing the barriers, if the barriers did not disenfranchise one select group of voters over another.
But they did.

(141 posts)no serious barriers to voting for white middle class people in Democratic leaning states he is quite correct. He is of course ignoring the glaring fact that Republican states have done everything they can to make voting as difficult as possible for people of color, the elderly and students. Not really surprised though he is after all a Republican and everything he says is pure garbage by definition.
