Merkel Warns U.K. of Isolation If Brexit Camp Wins Vote

Source: Bloomberg

German Chancellor Angela Merkel made her strongest intervention in the Brexit debate so far, warning that the U.K. would be isolated and lose influence if it leaves the European Union in the referendum in three weeks’ time.

Merkel cited trade and the single market as key reasons for the U.K. to stay in the 28-nation bloc, backing the economic arguments put forward by Prime Minister David Cameron and supported by bodies such as the International Monetary Fund. Campaigners for leaving argue that the U.K. can continue doing business freely with the EU and reach favorable free-trade deals with the rest of the world once out of the bloc.

“For those coming from the outside, and we’ve had lots of negotiations with third-party countries, we would never make the same compromises, or achieve the same good results, for states that don’t take on the responsibility and costs of the single market,” Merkel said at a news conference in Berlin on Thursday. “One nation alone will never be able to achieve such good results.”

The message from the leader of Europe’s biggest economy and the continent’s most powerful nation risks a British backlash as she adds her support for staying in to that of President Barack Obama and other world leaders. Cameron, who makes an hourlong television campaign appearance Thursday night, is attempting to regain the initiative after polls in recent days suggested a swing to the “Leave” campaign, which has moved its focus to cutting immigration.

all seem to want to force the rest of Europe and much of the world to be Germans.

Things didn't work out too well for the first two. I'm wondering how it will work our for her.

In other news, a Syrian migrant in France informed on associates in Germany. The Syrians in Germany were ISIS members sent by ISIS to blow things up. They traveled with migrants from Turkey to Greece and through the Balkans. They planned to blow up old town Dusseldorf which is apparently full of bars and beer halls. Its in the WaPost below the opinions. I'm having trouble with the link due to typing with two broken fingers which are getting in the way.

Also, the German parliament today voted to reprimand Turkey for the Armenian genocide during WWI. Germany was Turkey's ally then, and the parliament took partial responsibility. Merkel and her cabinet did not appear for the vote. Erdogan and all the ethnic Turks in Germany will just love this. For this he will charter boats for all refugees and send the boats directly to Hamburg.

Turkey is going to pay them back with more refugees that Germans don't want in their country. It's going to be a clusterfuck. D:

It will be a cluster.

I hadn't planned on going to Europe this summer, and that's just as well under the circumstances. That State Dept. travel warning seems more appropriate today than it was when issued.

It'll take a while for this to simmer down, no doubt.

They're up to their neck in Greek bonds and lousy derivatives. Greek money goes directly to DB and some of the big French banks.

Worrying times watching the far-right frog march the UK over the White Cliffs of Dover. Having lost the economic argument they have moved full-nativist with their immigrant bashing strategy.

Both Merkel and Obama are correct about how leaving the EU will diminish the UK's role in the world - ironic as much of what animates the emotions of the leave campain is a desire for the return of the British Empire. She is also right to point out the effects on trade to the British economy as it will have to adapt to the laws the EU sets whilst no longer having the ability to affect these laws.

10. What "Isolation" means....
Fri Jun 3, 2016, 11:28 AM

...is that we will be increasingly unable to look after our own interests through international cooperation, as more often than not we won't even be at the table to argue for our own interests on many issues that affect us.

However, this is a point that is lost on many people, who struggle to see how this can be relevant to their own lives.
