The State Board of Education deadlocked and did not adopt a resolution Friday that would have pushed back against the Obama administration's guidance on how schools should accommodate transgender students.
Board member Pat McPherson wanted the board to adopt the resolution, which would have declared the guidance on the use of restrooms and other facilities as federal overreach. It would have urged school district officials to get input from teachers and parents and "use their best discretion" before deciding whether to comply.
The resolution failed on a 3-3 vote. A majority was needed for passage.
Voting in favor of the resolution were McPherson, John Witzel and Glen Flint. Voting against were Rachel Wise, Pat Timm and Lillie Larsen. Molly O'Holleran and Maureen Nickels were absent.
