Former attorney general: Trump right to question judge’s fairness

Source: The Hill

Gonzales on Saturday said Trump has reason beyond just race to doubt Curiel, who is American, will treat him fairly.

“As someone whose own ancestors came to the United States from Mexico, I know ethnicity alone cannot pose a conflict of interests. But there may be other factors to consider in determining whether Trump’s concerns about getting an impartial trial are reasonable.”

Gonzales said Curiel is a member of La Raza Lawyers of San Diego, which Trump aides say is affiliated with a national group vociferously opposing Trump, National Council of La Raza (NCLR).

The Washington Post on Saturday reported that NCLR is unaffiliated with La Raza Lawyers of San Diego. It added Curiel is not a member of NCLR.

Wow, this is a power play. Calling in Alberto Gonzales to run interference for Trump, and to argue that being a member of minority bar association is enough to create bias is just outrageous. Under this line of argument, Trump can discriminate against women, because they would obviously be biased against him, because he is so sexist. But, it is okay, because a Republican woman will vouch for him and say that it is okay.

So much so I suspect Gonzáles is living one prolonged psychotic episode if he thinks that the anti-Hispanic bigotry Trump is fanning doesn't apply to him.

The partisan hiring of clueless, unqualified US Attorneys, whose only qualification appeared to be that they were right wing nut bags, set back the office for years, caused a mass exodus of good attorneys (those that he didn't outright fire for not being Republican enough), and severely damaged the reputation of the US Attorneys Office. It got so bad that he was forced to resign. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-08-27-ag-gonzales_N.htm

Alberto Gonzales should be ashamed of himself.

How anyone could think Gonzales has ANY credibility about anything is beyond me.

It's just one of the links that popped up when I Googled "Alberto Gonzales attorney general."

Here's some key paragraps from that August 27, 2007, article:

Alberto Gonzales, the nation's first Hispanic attorney general and a close friend of President Bush, resigned Monday after months of mounting bipartisan criticism over issues of competence and his handling of the firings of several U.S. attorneys. His tenure in Washington was frequently embroiled in controversy.
...
As White House counsel, Gonzales came under fire from Democrats and civil liberties groups for approving a legal opinion in 2002 that permitted interrogators to inflict mental and physical pain on terrorism suspects. Democrats said the policy sanctioned torture, and it was withdrawn.

He also helped draft a memorandum that called some Geneva Conventions protections for prisoners of war "obsolete."

But it was his testimony as attorney general before the Democrat-controlled Senate over the firings of U.S. attorneys that provoked a storm of protests from members of both parties.

Most are probably not acquainted with his record, have no idea what an Attorney General does, and if they pay any attention to this statement at all, will just accept it as another voice of authority and carry on. Mr Trump's supporters are not going to be swayed by anything.
