I知 not the right person to challenge Trump and Hillary... (Neo-Con David French bows out for 2016)
Source: The National Review
Indeed, the path is there. I spent the last several days with some of the best minds in politics. I learned that the ballot-access challenge can be met with modest effort (by an existing network ready to activate), that the polling for a true outsider independent was better than most people know, and that there are many, many Americans including outstanding political talents who are willing to quit their jobs today to help provide the American people with an alternative. But given the timing, the best chance for success goes to a person who either is extraordinarily wealthy (or has immediate access to extraordinary wealth) or is a transformational political talent. Im grateful for the opportunity to serve my country, and I thank God for the successes Ive had as a lawyer and a writer, but it is plain to me that Im not the right person for this effort. I believe with all my heart that there is an American movement ready to both resist the corruption, decadence, and dishonesty of the American elite and restore the promise of the American Dream. But that movement may not emerge for some time, and it might emerge only after further heartache and pain. Let me also say that each person involved in the effort to recruit an independent candidate is a patriot. They are standing strong on principle when the GOP leadership in lockstep now marches to Trumps beat. I admired them before this process began, and I admire them more even now.

(15,139 posts)"ready to both resist the corruption, decadence, and dishonesty of the American elite and restore the promise of the American dream." He's right. It's already happening and the message is resonating with the American people. What he seems not to realize is that it's being led by a democratic socialist named Bernie Sanders.

(8,954 posts)Since they are both former GOP governors but nonetheless apparently sane (unlike the presumptive GOP nominee), their ticket can be expected to cost Trump votes aplenty, as his suicide mission train wreck continues to careen down the tracks.

(8,954 posts)Once they get the sales pitch that legalized weed sales will generate beaucoup revenue for gov't coffers, therefore shifting and offsetting a share of the tax burden on the middle class. A somewhat different way in which to vote one's pocketbook, but it will resonate with some.

(35,692 posts)Don't forget that one Bill Kristol was partially responsible for the phenom DUers affectionately refer to as "Caribou Barbie." Recalling his never ending wrong predictions, has Kristol ever actually had a political success? Well there is Dan Quayle, I suppose. (Snort!) Further reading on Bill Kristol and Sarah Palin, if you have the stomach for it:
The rise and fall of Bill Kristol's crush on Sarah Palin
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/onetime-booster-bill-kristol-sours-on-sarah-palin/
My favorite quote from the piece:
Kristol publicly predicted that John McCain would tap the then-largely-unknown Palin as his running mate in June 2008; he reportedly pushed the McCain campaign to select her after being dazzled by Palin during a 2007 lunch in Alaska. Kristol said in November 2008 that Palin "reminds me a lot of FDR."
Besides the obvious question of what constituted "dazzled by Palin" for Kristol, who knew that Bill Kristol had a crush on FDR? How is that even possible?

(53,795 posts)It's a pretty random comparison: generous, progressive, aristocratic. About the only similarity is that before his illness FDR was pretty athletic and Palin, for all her sins, at least seems to be a pretty avid sportswoman.
