Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday night after decisive victories in the New Jersey and New Mexico primaries, and quickly appealed to supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont to unite with her against Donald J. Trump.
At a victory rally in Brooklyn, Mrs. Clinton took the stage with her hands clasped over her heart in gratitude, then threw open her arms in joy and savored a long moment as a jubilant crowd waved American flags and chanted Hillary.
Reaching for history as she became the first woman to win a major partys nomination, Mrs. Clinton pledged to build on the achievements of pioneers like the 19th-century leaders at Seneca Falls, N.Y., who began the movement for womens rights in America.
Tonight caps an amazing journey a long, long journey, Mrs. Clinton said, nearly a century after women won the right to vote nationwide. We all owe so much to those who came before, and tonight belongs to all of you.
She also lavished praise on Mr. Sanders, saying that their vigorous debate had been very good for the Democratic Party and America.

(613 posts)History is littered with egos who made assumptions and presumptions.
There is a very good reason for the old adage, don't count your chickens before they are hatched.
Hillary Clinton, in her bravado, may well be alienating the people she most needs to win. She was right last night to say she wasn't there yet. She should stick with that.
When a politician starts believing their own press, that's when things can really go off the tracks.

(50,528 posts)There is a decent chance she'll end the night 500 pledged delegates ahead of Bernie. If she does, NOTHING will save him because there aren't enough superdelegates to overcome that kind of deficit. Bernie's biggest problem isn't Hillary, though; it is the Federal Election Commission. There is more of a chance they will order Bernie to return contributions and repay his campaign for his Rome trip than there is of him winning the primaries.

I'm saying the Democratic Party needs to hear his argument, and needs to remember, the great Mass of Americans are not loyal to any one party. They are loyal to each other and concerned about the issues that directly affect them. Sanders speaks to those issue.
While the Democratic Party may be saying no to Bernie, I would not be so certain the American People as a whole are saying that. Most folks I've talked to want Bernie to stay in the race. Most of them would seriously consider voting for him if runs independently. The DNC needs start thinking about that, because they could well be hurting their own chances by taking this "he lost" approach to Sanders.

(50,528 posts)The people you know like him. That's fine; you have the right to.
Many of us look at his proposals, and reject them. We don't think his plans for the banks, healthcare or education are the way to go. We think his $15 minimum wage will destroy a lot of small businesses. And we know Bernie can't work with anyone. On the other hand, we have Secretary Clinton, who has realistic plans and is known for being able to work with both Democrats and Republicans. This is why Bernie only does well in states where cows outnumber people.

(382 posts)This is a very historic occasion, and Secretary Clinton has the right to celebrate. She is the avatar for a lot of women, including women who worked arduously for decades fighting for the right to vote. Women who fought for reproductive freedom. Women who fought discrimination in the workplace. And on and on.
Anybody not supporting Secretary Clinton after tonight is a Trump supporter in my eyes. I think Senator Sanders will very soon become a vocal supporter of Secretary Clinton. I hope you will become one too!
