ISIS Video Shows Explosion Of A 3,000-Year-Old Assyrian Temple

Source: Huffington Post

BAGHDAD, June 9 (Reuters) - Islamic State insurgents have posted a video showing a 3,000-year-old temple being blown up at the Assyrian city of Nimrud in northern Iraq, in their latest assault on some of the world’s greatest archaeological and cultural treasures.

The United Nations confirmed in a statement on Wednesday evening that satellite imagery showed “extensive damage to the main entrance” of the temple of Nabu, the Babylonian god of wisdom.

Nimrud was a 13th century BC Assyrian city, located 30 km (20 miles) south of the modern city of Mosul, which the hardline Islamic State militants seized control of in June 2014.

Blowing up the god of wisdom.

3. It seems logical to me.

In my mind, it's a given a medieval fundimentalist cult would attack any symbol of wisdom or knowledge.

4. Yep. Redneck yahoos always attack symbols of higher culture.

Every rabble that has invaded Egypt from the Mamluks to the French has defaced the Sphinx and the Pyramids. And modern American rednecks continue to deface American Indian sites.

The confederacy of dunces is always at war with people capable of creating interesting things.

26. Not sure it was the French that defaced the Sphinx

according to Wikipedia, it was earlier - at least the nosectomy.

So many amazing things in the world that I haven't been able to see because I'm poor and Americans aren't welcome anymore. There is still time....

6. Meh. ISIS doesn't care who they attack.

Former ISIS-members have told that ISIS runs religious schools for brainwashing people, but they only selectively quote from the Quran.

ISIS attacks Shias, ISIS attacks Sunnis, ISIS attacks fellow extremists like Al-Nusra...
A former ISIS-member has told how ISIS crucified one of its lowly fighters for robbing people, how a group of ISIS-fighters lynched their commander when he was insufficiently brutal...
It is known than an ISIS-"judge" has issued fatwas that are so restrictive that the heads of ISIS had to tell him to tone it down, lest their own people would violate his fatwas...

ISIS is an apocalyptic cult that believes that the end-times are upon us and that the people they are fighting are merely unwitting tools of Satan.
Their goal is to keep killing and killing, until Satan eventually reveals himself and leads his armies personally into battle against these warriors of God.
Then Satan brings ISIS to the brink of defeat, but at the last minute the good guys win.
And then all the killers, torturers and rapists of ISIS go to heaven.

Which means basically DAESH is about as representative of Islam as Westboro is representative of Christianaity.... NOT!

Westboro isn't bombing airports, races, and other places all around the world - being as they are so equivalent.

23. Right.

Westboro are nothing but freaks who are all talk; ISIS is a true death cult with the weapons and funding to match. ISIS needs to be bombed into the ground and sent to Hell where they came from, Westboro just needs to be slapped around and shamed.

Intentionally blowing up archaeological treasures is the same as not sending guards to museums in the midst of war?

12. I don't think we stopped the looting for one thing.

Don't get me wrong I think it is all wrong. I just don't think the US is a position to point fingers. We destroyed a country, killed and maimed our own soldiers unnecessarily, killed and maimed innocent men, women and children and destroyed a way of life for millions.

The recent bombing was sad and unnecessary but it's not the saddest thing that had happened.

17. Destruction of antiquities and historic architecture is S.O.P. in Saudi Arabia,

and has been for decades.

Yet, the American media gives that a pass for whatever reason, but this vandalism becomes fodder for every war-loving yahoo on the right-wing.

The contrast is illustrative.

32. Don't let these anti-ISIS people get you down.

They will always attack ISIS and make them out to be the bad guys, and there is nothing any of us can say to change their mind. Grant you the blowing up of ancient artifacts, the mass executions, and all that stuff makes it somewhat hard to defend and deflect away from ISIS, but I mean there are way bigger fish to complain about. Right? Right!

Yea, that was shameful, but these ISIS thugs are more than just shameless. They are also stupid, deranged savages who need to be weeded out of the human gene pool along with the people who support and finance them. After we're done with that, we need to come home from over there as fast as possible.

In modern times. Meaning today. Not 400 years ago. Just had to put it out there. We are no better than them!!

14. It's a terrible loss for humanity and for the region

It's terrible that a human construct that has survived so long is being destroyed because of a modern form of magical thinking that is itself even more primitive.

In this capitalist world, there is very little there to "leverage" and if there is ever a return to sanity in that part of the world, the antiquities that are their greatest tourism asset are being destroyed as well.

How will things ever change if they remain impoverished and ignorant?

explosion is intended to cover up the theft. ISIS is nothing but an organized crime syndicate.
