At that time, it snowed in Houston on average once every eleven years. But the Howe's brought ice hockey to Houston, Texas!
Rest in peace, Gordie Howe.

(8,646 posts)In an era where there was a lot of physical play...to last that long is amazing. He must've been the toughest player ever.
I was lucky enough to have an autograph from him when I was 7 or 8 - my best friend's dad worked with him....He asked my friend's dad if his kids had any friends that wanted some things signed. I didn't have anything except an old 'book of autographs' that I sent with my friend. It came back with a little note from Gordie and he signed it. I remember my dad being more excited than I was, LOLOL. And I was pretty excited because I knew he was a hockey legend. (LOL my dad was mad he didn't know about this beforehand, he said he'd have sent a hockey stick to be signed, not some old crappy autograph book). My friend got pictures with him and everything. I was quite jealous, lol. But who does that? Asks if kids want things signed? Sounds like he was as nice as Wayne Gretzky said he was.
Unfortunately, my mom must have thrown out my old tattered book, because we were unable to find it when my parents moved from my childhood home. It was a bad habit of my mom to throw out other people's stuff in a fit of cleaning (never her own stuff though, of course) and when my dad found out it was gone, he was quite upset. My dad doesn't get mad at my mom very often...but he was very angry.
RIP Mr. Hockey.

I loved watching him skate. I think he skated better than he walked on land. I was - envious...(I can't skate).

(6,829 posts)His long gone restaurant in Connecticut from the early 80's. I lived in Glastonbury and one day at the local supermarket Gordie was one person in front of me in the check out wearing a plain white tee shirt. My brush with greatness!
I'm always interested in the normal lives of celebrities. For the locals, the famous people in town just seem to be part of the townies like everybody else.

Has his own Hat Trick named for him: A goal, an assist, and a fight.
Mr Hockey was one of a kind.

(34,582 posts)the funny thing is, he only did that feat twice in his career. In fact, I believe he was only involved in 4 fights.

(21,046 posts)in the Houston Chronicle when he played for the Houston Aeros. Now, I know next to nothing about hockey.
A bunch of kids were in school and the teacher asked them what their parents did for a living.
Gordie's kid said, "My daddy doesn't work. He plays hockey!"
I thought it wasn't real hockey unless you had blood and lost teeth on the ice.

(67,782 posts)The list of hockey players who suited up in six different decades, including returning to the ice after being inducted into the Hall of Fame, is a short one: it starts and ends with Gordie Howe.
But the list of kids who skated around the pond until dark, picturing themselves passing, scoring, and enforcing like Howe, dreaming of hoisting the Stanley Cup like him - that one comprises too many to count. Howe's productivity, perseverance, and humility personified his adopted hometown of Detroit, to which he brought four championships and which he represented as an All-Star more than 20 times. The greatest players define their game for a generation; over more than half a century on the ice, Mr. Hockey defined it for a lifetime. Michelle and I send our condolences to his sons and daughter, his family, and his loyal fans from Hockeytown to Hartford to Houston and across North America.
