Heatzilla Will March Across the West From California to Arizona

Source: Bloomberg

It may be just a forecast, but it looks inevitable at this point: The West is about to bake.

An excessive heat watch from California across southern Arizona warning of temperatures reaching well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 Celsius) has been posted days in advance of the actual event. That early warning is a sign that meteorologists’ confidence is hot.

“For Sunday, some of the forecast highs across the Southwest are near or above records,” said Robert Oravec, a senior branch forecaster with the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. “That goes for both highs and record-high low temperatures.”

High lows can sound a bit funny to say but what they translate to is misery: Temperatures stay so warm overnight that there is little relief from the heat even after the sun has set, Oravec said.

Woke up at 3am because my air conditioner turned on. Being poor, I had it set to 88 degrees Fahrenheit...

Not fun.

I checked the forecast for the Wasatch (mostly SLC) after your post and it's predicted to jump to the mid-90s for us. (It's been high 70s-80).

I noticed that Australia is having a heat wave too, it's hotter there than in central and eastern Europe and central Russia and it's supposed to be winter there.

I'm in the colder parts, we had new snow on the mountains above 8K ft yesterday, gone now though. Supposed to jump to the 80s (predicted which usually means mid to high 90s) by Saturday in Southern Montana. Been raining a lot this past week. It was in the 90s for a week before that at 5K ft.

Eat melons, folks! Watermelons, cantaloupe, honeydew and even just plain old cucumbers! they provide electrolytes and hydration while helping to reduce body heat whether it's heat exhaustion, heat stroke, fever or just plain old too damned hot before any heat related illnesses get started. Water just won't do it alone unless you can spend a lot of time mostly submerged.
