DA declines to prosecute case against Alabama's Cam Robinson

Source: nfl.com

Alabama junior Cam Robinson, one of the most talented offensive tackles in college football, and Crimson Tide defensive back Laurence "Hootie" Jones will not be prosecuted on charges stemming from their arrests last month in their hometown of Monroe, La.

The district attorney declined to prosecute the case due to insufficient evidence, per NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

"I want to emphasize once again that the main reason I'm doing this is that I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence and teenage years working and sweating, while we were all at home in the air conditioning," District Attorney Jerry Jones told KNOE News.

The players were arrested on May 17 at 2:33 a.m. after a police officer approached Robinson's vehicle in the parking lot of a park, according to the Monroe Police Department. Per the MPD, the officer smelled marijuana, noticed a handgun in Jones' lap and directed the players to exit the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed marijuana and another firearm reported stolen from Baldwin County, Ala., according to the MPD.

the DA isn't going to be responsible for screwing up that kid's chance at a NFL career especially if Alabama benefits from it

this kid, and I'm calling him a kid because I'm 48 and he's young enough to be my child, has probably skirted by on his athletic ability for years

if he was anything like the jocks in my high school, he never got blamed for anything and got away with pretty much everything

I hope that this kid doesn't turn into another Aaron Hernandez

The prosecutor is from Louisiana not Alabama. He would be a LSU fan not Alabama. SEC fans don't cross their borders.

The explanation is truly alarming. What does how hard he has worked have to do with whether he had a stolen gun or not? It was under his seat (drivers) in his car. Without being rich or famous he is going down unless he can prove how the gun got there without his knowledge.

If they had found that on me I suspect I would be going to trial or trying to get a plea deal since I am not a football player.

I'm not going to complain that a black man was not railroaded and lynched for once in a very racist state.

that because of the favorable treatment, the guys had to be white. Nice to see that the "playing field" was tilted in their favor instead.

Maybe the second. But this is 2016 not 1956. People should not try and pretend it is. I suspect they have never been to the modern South and just continue to believe out dated myths about race relations.

Leads to more gun violence. You have someone in possession of a stolen weapon and don't prosecute?

They were charged with:

Robinson was charged with illegal possession of stolen firearms, a felony, as well as possession of a controlled dangerous substance and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of narcotics. Jones was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of narcotics.

I would have had to hire an attorney at my own personal expense. Go to court and attempt to prove that I was not breaking any laws by carrying a stolen weapon. The odds are if I didn't have the proper permits, and wasn't able to prove I obtained the gun legally, I'd be convicted. Not to mention if I had some pot on me they'd definitely take advantage of the law to trump up the charges on me.

Drugs, gangs, guns and a local prosecutor who didn't charge him with felony assault while at Florida.
