Lawmakers set sights on assault weapons bans in Nebraska, Iowa

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joe Duggan

LINCOLN — Look for battles over assault weapons in Nebraska and Iowa next year as some state lawmakers say they will push to ban the types of guns used in recent mass shootings.

Senators in both states said they will try to pass assault weapons bans in the wake of Monday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court not to review Connecticut’s prohibition on sales of the military-style rifles. Six other states, along with multiple cities and towns, also ban or restrict the weapons.

“I’m going to craft legislation to ban their possession and ownership for civilian use,” said Nebraska Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha. “These are military-style weapons and they should be in the hands of the military only.”

Iowa Sen. Matt McCoy of Des Moines said Monday he feels compelled to introduce a similar bill in response to the recent massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

An AR-15 rifle, the gun reportedly used in Orlando, is a lightweight semi-automatic firearm. Features include a pistol grip, a handguard on the barrel and a standard 30-cartridge magazine.

File in every state, we have a way forward now. States have the right to restrict access to killing machines. This is very good news.

If they should be in the hands of the military only, why is no military using them?
