(CNN)North Korea fired a missile Wednesday morning from the city of Wonsan on its eastern coast, according to a spokesperson from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The launch occurred at 5:58 a.m. local time and is presumed to be a Musudan missile, the official said. The South Korean military presumes the launch has been a failure, but did not elaborate, according to the spokesperson. North Korea has made at least four previous attempts this year to test this type of missile.

The United States. is aware of a North Korea missile launch, two U.S. officials told CNN. The officials said it is too early to know the type of missile and whether the launch was successful.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea on Wednesday apparently fired two powerful new Musudan mid-range missiles, U.S. and South Korean military officials said, but at least one of the launches failed, its fifth such reported flop since April.

Despite the repeated failures, the North's persistence in testing the Musudan worries Washington and its allies, Tokyo and Seoul, because the missile's potential 3,500-kilometer (2,180-mile) range puts much of Asia and the Pacific, including U.S. military bases there, within its striking range.

Each new test also presumably provides valuable insights to North Korean scientists and military officials as they push toward their goal of a nuclear and missile program that can threaten the U.S. mainland. Pyongyang earlier this year conducted a nuclear test and launched a long-range rocket that outsiders say was a cover for a test of banned missile technology

North Korea conducted two back-to-back tests of a new medium-range missile on Wednesday, with at least one launch ending in failure, South Korea’s defence ministry said.

The first test shortly before 6am local time was deemed to have failed. South Korea said it was unable to confirm the status of a second launch, about two hours later, from the same location on the east coast.

Both test were believed to be of an intermediate-range Musudan missile that is designed to reach US bases as far away as Guam, but is not known to have ever been tested successfully.

North Korea had previously carried out four failed Musudan tests in 2016, in a setback for a weapons programme that ultimately aspires to develop a proven nuclear strike capability against the US mainland.

North Korea launched what appeared to be an intermediate-range missile on Wednesday to a high altitude in the direction of Japan before it plunged into the sea, military officials said, a technological advance for the isolated state after several test failures.

The launch came about two hours after a similar test failed, South Korea's military said, and covered 400 km (250 miles), more than halfway towards the southwest coast of Japan's main island of Honshu.

The launches and earlier nuclear tests show continued defiance of international warnings and a series of U.N. Security Council resolutions and sanctions, which North Korea rejects as an infringement of its sovereignty.

Japanese Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said the second missile reached an altitude of 1,000 km (620 miles), indicating North Korea had made progress.

North Korea leader says missile gives ability to attack U.S. in the Pacific: KCNA

North Korea leader Kim Jong Un said after supervising the test launch of a "medium long-range strategic ballistic missile" that the country came to possess "the sure capability to attack" U.S. interests in the Pacific, official media reported on Thursday.

South Korean and U.S. military officials have said the North launched two intermediate-range missiles on Wednesday. The first of the two was considered a failure.

The test-fire was successful without any impact to the security of neighboring countries, the North's KCNA news agency said.
