Brussels rejects Boris Johnson 'pipe dream' over single market access

Source: Guardian (UK)

European diplomats have dismissed claims from Boris Johnson that the UK could negotiate access to the EU single market without obeying any of the rules.

“You cannot have your cake and eat it,” said an EU diplomat, echoing a phrase the former mayor of London used during the campaign and which looks set to come back to haunt him.

In a further blow to the leave camp’s credibility, Germany’s leading business group distanced itself from Johnson’s suggestion that German business expected Britain’s free trade with Europe to continue seamlessly.

If the UK's Conservative Party gets its way with that, the right wing rush out of the EU will reach fever pitch.

They probably should have learned from the Grexit standoff that the EU plays hardball.

But it by no means accounted for the vast majority of the votes.

And it was ignorant at best, ignoring what the labor unions were saying.

A few years ago before the London Olympics Bo Jo was on David Letterman talking about his birth in America which he doesn't remember of course, how he loved riding around with Mike Bloomberg in NY in his large, black SUVS, and more.

When Dave asked Boris if he cut his own hair? Boris was laughing and embarrassed at the same time.

No. Boris has the "free trade haven" all to himself. He has plans to turn the UK into a "hyper-capitalist island freed from EU regulation", a "neoliberal fantasy island" once it is free of the EU's 'cumbersome' rules on labor and the environment.

It takes at least a couple years and costs $2,350. He must apply personally at the US Counsel
It will cost him more than the renunciation fee.

I checked and he still has his US citizenship.

Bigger container ships are now going to be able to transit the locks and make a direct trip to the East Coast of the US and Britain. Frankly, the EU makes very little that cannot be sourced elsewhere.

The world just got smaller.

Congrats to the Panamanians on a job well done!

https://www.bbh.com/en-us/insights/redrawing-global-shipping-routes--the-panama-canal-gets-an-upgrade/10940

Coming from most of Asia, the Suez canal is still a quicker route than the Panama - from the link above, Shanghai to New York is 26 days via the Panama, and 28 days via the Suez. But to Europe, you'll add on a couple of days to the Panama trip, and take off perhaps 7 (if you go to a Mediterranean port) or 4 (to a North Sea port) from the Suez figure. Either way, Suez is quicker than Panama.

It's good for California, or, say, Peru to Europe, but Panama is mostly important for the US east coast.
