Germany: Man finds $166,000 in old cupboard, hands it back

Updated 6:50 pm, Tuesday, June 28, 2016

BERLIN (AP) — Police in the German town of Minden say a 25-year-old man who arrived last year as a refugee is their "hero of the day" after he found some 150,000 euros ($166,095) — and handed it to authorities.

The unidentified Syrian man discovered the money in a cupboard he had been given by a charitable organization.

Minden police said Tuesday that he found about 50,000 euros in cash and savings books containing more than 100,000 euros hidden under a board while assembling the furniture.

Police said in a statement that while small amounts of money are regularly handed in to authorities, "such a large sum is the absolute exception."

I think, sadly, most people are easily lead to make the wrong choices.

this story gives me a small amount of hope.

You don't turn in a dollar bill you found on the ground, so why turn in 100,000+ of them? Whoever left it there has more, turning it in is just giving it to the state. Keep it, improve your quality of life with it, and the world keeps spinning.

I don't know what will happen to the money under German law. In New York, the police would hold onto it for a time -- I think it's one year -- to see if anyone could come forward and prove ownership. If no one did, then the money would become the property of the man who found it.

Ah, temptation. Think of all the materials things I could get.

I'd give that money back too. I'd pay that karmic cost. You never know when you might need it.
