4 Children Fatally Stabbed in Memphis; Mother in Custody

Source: ABC News

Officials say four young children in suburban Memphis have been fatally stabbed and their mother has been taken into custody.

Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham told reporters deputies were called to an apartment complex in the county shortly before 1 p.m. Friday.

Oldham said they are working to notify the next of kin and won't release names before that.

Officials have not released the ages of the children, but sheriff's office spokesman Earle Farrell said deputies responding to the scene called them "babies."

1. Lemme guess:

She was probably on SSRIs (in many of these cases, the culprit usually is).

May those beautiful children rest in peace, and All the Best to the grieving family.

2. that is simply your guess, you have nothing to substantiate your guess.

she could have been on SSRI's, as they are a widely used anti-depressant. However, I wouldn't blame the drug until you at least, know she was taking them, why she was taking them, and her history of mental illness prior to this tragic incident.

3. Hence, the guess.

But that has in fact often been the case in incidents involving psychotic episodes and multiple injuries or deaths - even in otherwise stable people.

11. Why 'guess' about a tragedy?

No rushing need to guess - just wait to hear news.

12. Because that's all we can do - just as every other comment below does (and rightfully).

If anything pharmaceutical contributed to this tragedy (as has often been the case in the past), we deserve to know. Discussing possible contributing causes is what everyone reading about these news - on DU or not - is doing, even if only to themselves.

The family involved certainly is.

4. Likewise, post partum depression/psychosis can be a terrible thing.

Along with any other number of potential chemical or mental triggers for this sort of violence against the children. But remember - just because the mother is in custody doesn't mean she was the one who held the knife.

I share your wishes for the grieving family.

6. True.

Even Victorian England in all its oppressive self-righteousness made an exception for post-partum depression in cases where the mother took the life of her baby.

Even so, we should know if SSRIs were involved; they often have been since the advent of Prozac in the early '90s.

27. Yeah, if they were all young, this is the most likely cause

I've known 3 women with post partum psychosis. Two are dead. One is disfigured.

10. I take an SSRI.

I don't recall having the urge to ever assault anybody, much less murder children.

Don't disparage people that have been helped by them and cast them as raving lunatics that kill children.

28. Trying to stop it suddenly can get you there

I was on one for 8 months when they first came out. I dreamed in bright color, but it did nothing for the fibro, so I wanted off it. I found out very quickly that it would have to be tapered down.

31. Well that's true.

Even missing it for a day or two and I can tell. You pretty much realize that you will never, ever sleep again and have a low grade headache.

I'd like to think I still wouldn't be inclined to run around gunning down anybody, let alone family members.

15. Very good point.

Religious hysteria, as we all know, can have an almost hypnotic effect on weak (or weakened) people.

Stephen King didn't get his inspiration for Carrie out of nowhere.

damaging.

ssri's have given many people their lives back. if you dont think that is the case, you are too uniformed to comment on the situation.

health care and research, btw. We will have more shootings and stabbings because of that, it is a known, statistical fact.

It might not be fair, but in the end one makes a choice as to what to do. Spend less and keep the value of money up for those who have the most, or invest in the country and save families and their lives and listen to people complain about the spending. Either way, we all pay the bill.

I would rather fight the complainers than hear the kids crying as they die. Maybe some folks can't hear them from where they are.

On edit: I don't mean he can go out like a real estate swindler and just make it all better.

But in my view, our problem with many things ain't terrorists and it ain't testosterone - it is the need for someone to stand up and tell us we need to invest in our "human" infrastructure, neglected now for so many decades. Not the concrete stuff, the human squishy stuff. Mental health is just a part of it, but it would be a start.

Drop the muslim cover, that's for the swindler.

That would do more for gun control than the current crop of "legislation that won't pass" controls.

13. Sounds as if she could have gotten help, or at least afforded it...

"The apartment where the stabbing occurred is in a gated community with a golf course called The Greens at Irene. "

You don't rent on a golf course cheaply.

16. But that would assume that she knew she was mentally ill

I have struggled with depression for the last 40 years. I've participated in several clinical trials. One of the things the always ask is "Do you hear things other people don't hear or see things they don't see?" I always laugh and say "How would I know?" They are not amused.

But that's the problem. Mental illness isn't like a broken leg. If you fall and your leg hurts like hell, you go to the ER. But it's not that way with mental illness. While a depressed person may realize something's wrong and seeks help, a someone who is psychotic may not. Those hallucinations are REAL.

I was in the hospital once and everybody talks about why they are there. One young woman said she was driving and God spoke to her. She was startled and jumped the curb, causing some minor property damage. The cops said she could go to jail or go to the hospital. So she was taking the antipsychotics they gave her and going along with everything so she could get out. But she didn't think anything was wrong with her. She said "I'm not crazy. I just had a spiritual experience. I don't know why they don't understand that."

19. Google says it's pretty cheap. $685 - $930

I know money goes farther in TN than it does in some other places, but being able to afford $930 in rent doesn't mean one can afford insurance, copays, etc. Especially in a state that did not participate in medicaid expansion: it's pretty easy to picture a family living in a decent apartment falling into the gap between being poor enough for Medicaid and prosperous enough to afford useful health coverage.

20. There's NO help for depression even for the rich!

It doesn't matter if you're poor or rich, black or white, man or woman, if you're depressed, you get magic pills thrown your way and a "So I'll see you in three months, what was your name again?"

21. For all the replies to my post, I'll stand corrected...

I suffer from severe depression myself and have never been given a drug that puts a real dent in it and one on one weekly sessions get expensive and eventually tiring... It's a fucking hard thing to deal with.
