Serbia cafe killing: Gunman shoots wife and four others, injuring 20
Source: BBC
Five people have been shot dead and at least 20 injured in a cafe in north-eastern Serbia.
Police say the gunman killed his wife and another woman, before randomly shooting at other customers at the cafe.
Three children were among those injured in the attack near the city of Zrenjanin, the interior ministry said.
The gunman was arrested and police are investigating his motive, which is believed to be jealousy.
Witnesses told Serbia's state TV that the attacker came to the Makijato cafe and saw his wife there with a group of friends, the AP news agency reports. He apparently went home and came back with a gun.
"He just pulled out a gun and started shooting, first into the air," one of the witnesses, Svetozar Manojlovic, said.

(335 posts)One reaction to that is, "stop reporting shootings."
But another is to value values like free speech and reporting even with the price.
Unfortunately it's a choice, you can't have both.
What you do get though are people who pick one side, and by emphasizing that side, use it for their own benefit.
Reporting on ISIL also seems to contribute to some people deciding to commit acts and say they're for ISIL. It's a price of freedom.

(335 posts)There's an argument that infamy might motivate some, and hiding their identity might reduce the 'reward' - at the price of the 'public's right to know'.
Of course there are all kinds of issues even if you want to do that, from the competition in the media industry where if one can learn the identity - and they likely can, how many people know, they shooter's acquaintances and family.
And also, there's that 'right to know' issue. You realize then that the government could 'disappear' someone on the grounds they're a shooter and hide their identity and never account for their actions. How about a public trial? I doubt it's practical at all.

(16,199 posts)Most are planned. What is more likely is the news helps with ideation in people who are troubled, either by circumstances or mental issues. One common theme is people who carry these attacks out feel the world has screwed them, and they seek to screw it back.
