Dog Retrieves Hand After Man Loses It In Firecracker Explosion

Source: CBS

A Chicago nurse got a rude awakening Thursday afternoon when a man in her Portage Park neighborhood blew off his hand with a firecracker – a body part that was found hours later by the nurse’s dog.

Cheri Steigert normally works the overnight shift and was sleeping around 3:30 p.m. when she heard a large explosion and a scream.

She learned that a man had been injured in a fireworks explosion and lost at least two fingers. A few hours later, she learned it was even worse.

Steigert let her dog out in the yard, and it returned with something in its mouth and dropped the item – a bunny rabbit, she thought, at first....

"The hand was found about 250 feet away at Steigert’s residence, on West Dakin."

I think it was more than a firecracker!

I remember I used to light ladyfingers between my fingers when I was a kid. I'm so lucky to have made it intact!

Every year people are injured or killed by illegal fireworks, and while it's always sad, they're illegal for a reason.

I imagine that this is not how he hoped to declare his independence.

in the alleys where technically ... No thing or no one will get hurt (if you run fast enough )
Big boom sound off the surrounding garages because it is surrounded

Edit to add fireworks are illegal here. They are mostly coming out of Indiana where it is legal and there are stores at the state line border

with my dogs that night. Keep them distracted from the illegal fireworks people are going to be popping off in the neighborhood. They always get really scared.

Melted off a nice strip of skin down to my wrist.

It's a nice scar to show to my nieces when I tell them why it's just the adults who get to handle the flaming explosives.

That was NOT the little red-firecracker of my day.

Still carrying a leg scar from a firecracker my brother threw it at me. Yah, we were throwing firecrackers at each other - and it didn't go off. So after the "battle" I surveyed the battlefield and saw this unfulfilled cracker and for some reason still a mystery to me put it into my jean's pocket. Sure, the damn thing went off a few seconds later and, yes, it hurt like hell. Worse was my brother laughing his ass off as I screamed and hopped about on the sidewalk. Even more embarrassing was pulling down my pants as my mother treated the seared upper thigh with iodine and Vaseline .
