Judge to decide later whether Sheriff Joe Arpaio will face criminal contempt charges

Source: Arizona Republic

Plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Arpaio want to ensure sheriff’s employees and officials are disciplined for their actions, but the judge says does not want to bind future sheriffs.

A federal judge said he will issue his final order in civil contempt proceedings against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio before moving on to consider whether to refer Arpaio and several of his deputies for criminal contempt charges.

Judge G. Murray Snow declared his intentions Friday during a hearing in U.S. District Court that, to a great extent, was a descent in minutiae. The main issues discussed were how the plaintiffs in the class-action suit would be compensated for being unjustly arrested or detained by the Sheriff’s Office; who should oversee disciplinary procedures in the agency; and who will have oversight of the office.

“It’s not lost on me that the sheriff is running for re-election,’’ said Snow. “It’s also not lost on me that the sheriff is 84 years old.”

Arpaio needs to be sentenced to serve his time in one of his tent jails.

And it's not even needed anymore, the Maricopa county jail population has dropped quite a bit over the last few years so the only reason it's still open is for PR.

him die in a jail cell. He has fucked up many lives. The arrogance that he is qualified makes me sick. He is an 84 year old racist prick.

It's lost on me why either of those matter. This man, and his underlings, have wrought terrible harm on those in their incarcerated care AND have willfully defied court orders. And you don't want to bind future sheriffs? From what? Adhering to the law and complying with judges' orders?
