Dallas Gunman Learned Tactics At Texas Self-Defense School
Source: Associated Press
By REESE DUNKLIN, JULIET LINDERMAN Published JULY 10, 2016, 8:58 AM EDT
DALLAS (AP) The gunman who killed five police officers at a protest march had practiced military-style drills in his yard and trained at a private self-defense school that teaches special tactics, including "shooting on the move," a maneuver in which an attacker fires and changes position before firing again.
Micah Johnson, an Army veteran, received instruction at the Academy of Combative Warrior Arts in the Dallassuburb of Richardson about two years ago, said the school's founder and chief instructor, Justin J. Everman.
Everman's statement was corroborated by a police report from May 8, 2015, when someone at a business a short distance away called in a report of several suspicious people in a parked SUV.
The investigating officer closed the case just minutes after arriving at a strip mall. While there, the officer spoke to Johnson, who said he "had just gotten out of a class at a nearby self-defense school." Johnson told the officer he was "waiting for his dad to arrive" and pick up his brother. No one else was apparently questioned.

White Men and Their Guns

The issue, really, is why so many white middle-American men view any effort to regulate firearms as an assault on their very identity -- and thus fight sane and rational laws as if their lives and liberties were at stake. . . . . . .
"So guns are no longer merely functional hardware for the enjoyment of outdoor sports and hunting. Increasingly they [guns] have become something else: totems of manhood and symbols of identity for a cohort of white, middle-American, rural and exurban men.
"Consider the ads that gun manufacturers run to lure their buyers. Glock guns give men "confidence to live your life." The Walther PPX handgun is "Tough. Very Tough." The Tavor Semi-Automatic Rifle, gripped menacingly by a faceless man wearing a sniper's jacket and shooting gloves, will restore the "balance of power" to anyone holding the gun.
"Ads often invite men to imagine themselves as warriors in camouflage taking on a hostile world. Buying a Bushmaster semi-automatic "confirms that you are a Man's Man, the last of a dying breed, with all the rights and privileges duly afforded."

(54,770 posts)Probably best thing, but I'm fine with allowing a gun or two AT HOME for hunting and self-defense. Other than that, we've let this crud get out of hand to pacify/coddle a bunch of mostly right wing NRA types.
Duckhunter935
(16,974 posts)To stop this, you need to ban and confiscate firearms. Yo include most police officers.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)You don't have to confiscate them.
Here's the thing. If you can't take them out on the range, and you don't want to be caught transporting one if, say, you are in an accident or pulled over for a violation, then the ability to move about freely with these weapons becomes more difficult.
That guy who was lawfully carrying his weapon during the Dallas protest would not be mistaken for the shooter, because he wouldn't be parading around with it.
The mobility of these weapons becomes restricted when nobody has to guess if you are a "lawful carrier" or some nut who is going to open fire on a crowd in a few seconds.
Duckhunter935

Where are all the Thompson automatic weapons the mob had several decades ago? You think these people lined up and turned them in? But isn't it weird that you never see a tommy gun used in a crime anymore?
Why do you suppose that is? Did all the tommy guns just evaporate or what?

And the large majority of guns turned in during the buybacks were rifles and shotguns, not handguns.
And the biggest amount of gun crime here is from handguns.
And a lot of countries with the toughest laws also have the worst crime.
Maybe when our population as a whole becomes as civilized as Australia we will have less people buying guns.
Besides, I mostly have a weapon because I often carry large sums of money as part of 1 of my jobs.

(3,595 posts)Identify the weapons and circumstances under which the gun will not be allowed.
Year one: You get a bounty for turning in your gun. Maybe a range from $50.00 to $1,000.00, depending on the weapon.
Year two: You can turn the gun in without penalty but no bounty.
Year three: If you are found with a prohibited weapon or one is found in conjunction with a valid search, automatic 5 years. That will get the support of the prison industry which seems to have as much political pull as the gun industry.

Guns are fucking useless for most purposes claimed for them.
I'm a cold berserker bastard when everything is turning to shit, which is why I'm a pacifist; by necessity, not inclination. That's my mom's family. Berserkers, the whole lot of them. My mom's dad was a conscientious objector in World War II. He built and repaired ships for the Merchant Marine as an alternative to prison.
My other grandfather was an Army Air Force officer in the war. He wanted to fly airplanes and other romantic shit but his mad skills dealing with eccentric scientists, artists, and other engineers kept him mostly on the ground here in the U.S.A.. He didn't talk about the war. Sometime during the war he picked up a knack with exotic metals and later became an engineer for the Apollo Project. He'd always talk about the Apollo Project, he made some bits of metal that took men to the moon and back, and some of those bits of metal are in the Smithsonian. He chose not to talk about bits of metal designed to kill people.
My dad, and my wife's dad were both military medical people. They were not itching to shoot anyone. My wife's dad was used as a human guinea pig, probably because his parents were Mexican and Native American, so he got to witness an atomic bomb explosion up close from a hole in the ground, and then march across ground zero while everything was still hot. My dad was a nearsighted Radar O'Reilly clerk, extra large. Uncle Sam paid for our fathers university educations, my wife's dad ultimately a ranger for the National Park Service, my dad an artist. Both of them teachers along the way. Zero gun love passed on.
My dad's favorite cousin married a celebrated Army shooter. He trained Olympians. When I was a kid he had a buffalo head on the wall of his living room, an animal he'd shot himself, hunting with his dad. For the vast majority of his life now, he's considered himself a lover, not a fighter or a hunter.
I'm a hunter because that's my name. Oh well.
I've hunted too, but frankly I'm happier as mostly vegetarian. My wife is entirely vegetarian, but I'll eat meat when others are serving it, especially fish or animals they caught themselves.
My great grandparents were ranchers and dairy people. My niece thinks goats, meat and dairy, are the future of livestock.
I think my brother's wife, in our highly matriarchal family, is probably the official separator of guns from their fools. Fortunately she hasn't had reason, not that she'd talk about it.

Yet it seems you flog it at every available opportunity. Other than perhaps as to understand how your own viewpoint developed, it's ponderous and irrelevant. Almost as if you think your family history is so much more sophisticated and interesting than any other. It's not. To the subject of guns, you are claiming they are useless for self defense? I can tell you from personal experience that is false. Which one of us is right?
