Union: Gov. Dayton's comments 'reckless'

Source: KARE11

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota's largest labor union serving law enforcement across the state is calling Governor Dayton's recent comments following the shooting death of Philando Castile "unthinkable and irresponsible," and "reckless."

"Would this have happened if ... the driver and passenger were white?" Dayton asked on Thursday. "I don't think it would've. So I'm forced to confront and I think all of us in Minnesota are forced to confront that this kind of racism exists."

On Sunday, Sean Gormley, executive director of Law Enforcement Labor Services, released the following statement:

Last week’s tragic shootings in Dallas, Falcon Heights, Minn. and Baton Rouge have tested our emotions, our faith and our resolve as a community and a nation. Difficult issues are justifiably being confronted and tensions are running high.

But they are wrong in this. I understand they want to support their members, but I'm with Gov Dayton on this.

And they don't defend killer cops from getting indicted, or at least thrown off the force.

Big fu_cking difference.

And your use of an obscenity does not make your argument any stronger. Police unions are a collective bargaining agent for their members just like any other union. All unions tend to protect bad actors. It is the nature of the beast.

I'm surprised someone on a progressive site doesn't get that.

Does it have anything to do with the vast majority of the high-profile victims killed by cops are black people whose lives don't seem to matter?

2. Do Gormley's comments somewhat support Gov. Dayton's statement?

..."Police officers have a duty to protect and to serve all—including those who dislike or distrust cops."

If this is true, why are unarmed black people killed at a higher rate than armed white folks? Police don't want justice, they just want a pass to do whatever they feel like, including killing someone and claiming fear when the person was incapacitated prior to the killing.

3. Police unions don't for the most part consider themselves to be labor unions.

They think they are better than labor unions.

The police associations have consistently demonstrated that they are not the professional organization that they need to be. Professionals strive to be better by striving to better themselves with training and ethical conduct. They do neither.

For them to ignore the reality of misconduct and criminal behavior within their ranks shows the corruption of their organization.

quite often with members of the Metro City Councils and now with the Governor. The Guy is now in a no win situation,Public sentiment has turned against the Peace Officers Union, simply due to the fact, most of the bad Cops get to keep their jobs due to Arbitration Rulings, and then as a result of some clerical mistake.

I don't think some people understand......

I think every elected official or pundit could support the cops and if there were still pictures of people being shot and pinned down and dying after being stopped for minor offenses than resentment would still be there, maybe even worse because nobody would recognize it.
