Trump Plans Public Event Friday With VP Pick (down to Newt, Pence, Christie)

Source: NBC News JUL 12 2016, 5:15 PM ET

Donald Trump will showcase his vice presidential pick at a public event on Friday, multiple sources tell NBC News.

Trump's possible picks are thought to be narrowed to three candidates: Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

While the joint appearance is expected on Friday, it's not clear whether or not the identity of the pick could be released or could leak earlier in the week.

Trump is scheduled to attend a fundraiser and rally in Indiana Tuesday night with Pence; he campaigned with Christie on Monday and with Newt Gingrich last week.

IIRC correctly, the electors of any state can't cast both presidential and vice presidential ballots for residents of their own state.

It's easily skirted around. Cheney changed his residence to Wyoming to run with Dubya. It wasn't skirting that particularly requirement but Nixon was officially a resident of New York, not California, when he was elected president.

However none of them will help in the GE, but Christie has the best chance of getting the fiscal Republicans to come over to Trump, many of whom, so far, are lukewarm towards Trump. Ask any wall street broker type of the three and they'll probably sing Christie's praises the most. Christie is familiar to them and he's got this bullshit "getting things done in the face of opposition" halo with the conservative crowd.

Newt is old, and bad, news except for a few wacky die-hards. Pence doesn't even rate except for the dying off evangelicals and other Christian conservative radicals. That's not the voting block it once was.

There isn't one good GOP choice in the field anywhere in the US. Any pick will alienate some major group the GOP needs.

NY money is already distancing themselves from Trump, Christie would shore that up. However, as you say, that will likely alienate the religious right and rural voters. If Trump picks Pence that will play well with the religious and rural, but signal to money that Trump isn't serious and they will close up the wallet.

And Newt is just "ew" to both groups. There is a tiny slice of religious conservative money that still believes in the Contract for America (I've met them), but they aren't much help in a Presidential campaign.

A more likely scenario:

Trump announces a major presser for potential running mate. The media immediately ratchets up the 24/7 news cycle coverage and doubles down with speculation and conviction, giving Trump an even larger news cycle market share.

Among the pomp and circumstance, a jovial, smirking Trump emerges. With a gasp and an index finger, he announces that the whole charade has been a live-action, reality-based programming skit that will air nationally this fall on Monday's and 9 p.m. on NBC.

Trump drops mic and exits stage right...
