Massive heat dome forecast to bake much of U.S. by late next week
Source: Washington Post
A huge, hot area of high pressure is forecast to develop over the central United States next week, which may result in the nations most significant heat wave of the summer.
Forecast models, across the board, suggest this dome of hot air will be massive, affecting most of the country, except the Pacific Northwest.
It is too soon to say exactly how hot temperatures will be, but initial indications are that the central United States may face some of the countrys hottest weather with respect to normal. Record heat is certainly a possibility, although exactly how many records fall and where wont come into focus for several more days.
The worst of the heat wave may still be seven to nine days away. Forecasts this far into future carry with them substantial uncertainty, although confidence that a significant event is likely is boosted in this case due to forecast model agreement.

Abundant? Theres less than 20 years worth of coal left in America.
Affordable? Coal may seem cheaper, until you start to factor in all of the delayed costs the dirty form of energy will rack up thanks to climate change.
Reliable? By all accounts, the coal industry is in major trouble.

(26,177 posts)Temps in the 90's, no rain until just recently, and still not nearly enough in my part of the state. I haven't mowed my back lot in a month, the house lawn in almost 3 weeks. And the last time I mowed was just to shorten the weeds because the grass is brown and pretty much dormant.
All I'm concentrating on maintaining are my vegetable and flower gardens.

(26,177 posts)I watch these lovely big storms approaching, on radar, but they start breaking up just before they reach us. It rains for 10 or 15 minutes, and then the sun comes out and the water evaporates before much can soak in. We need a good, day long soak.
I use landscaping fabric in my veg garden, so that really helps keep the moisture in the soil. My garden is going gangbusters. The tomato plants LOVE the hot nights.

(8,636 posts).....we're more likely to get video news reports of highways buckling. After all, that makes an interesting visual image - cars going airborne after hitting a bulge in the roadway.
Do we even count excess deaths in heat waves over here? I imagine the CDC does; but, it rarely reaches the news. I haven't seen a headline: "Hundreds die in record heat."

As it is, we'll have triple digits until Tuesday, when there's a possibility for enough cloud cover to keep us in the mid 90s.
This summer has sucked so far.
