As president he seemed more appropriate to a backwater like Yemen - not a G20 powerhouse like Turkey.

The last little spate of King-or-President-for-Life, what's the difference? did him in.

It's been seven or eight years that the fight with the courts has been going on. I hope the army consolidates and then gets the judges to help them form an interim government to get back to some sort of normalized status.

Erdogan wasn't the first man who thought he was king and likely won't be the last. The country is structured to allow the military to intervene when a strongman takes over--or tries to.

I don't know what the last straw was, although I suspect it was the attack on Ataturk Airport 2 weeks ago. Erdogan has been very soft on DAESH. Then again, he was going to put in a new top man at the military and the military was having none of it.

CBS has suggested the Gulenist movement has had a part in this, also.

It's moving so quickly that nobody knows much of anything for certain, only that tanks have rolled through the streets and there has been gunfire and it looks like a few bombs have gone off.

I'm hoping for the best outcome there. I've known Turks online as intelligent, educated, and wickedly funny people.

in response. And, to add spice to things, Johnson's great-grandfather was a Turkish journalist and politician who was summarily executed in the aftermath of WWI by people who thought he was too friendly with the British.

He'll see how many friends he has, especially in the military. See if there is enough muscle to get him into power and put the coup out of business. Who knows.
