Barack Obama backs President Erdogan as world leaders express concern

Source: The Independent

The United States has called on all parties in Turkey to support President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government against a coup attempt by the military - with other world leaders expressing concern about the upheaval in a Nato member country.

President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by phone and gave their support to Mr Erdogan.

it seems that maybe the irked Erdogan was going to, and still might, pivot to Russia and show NATO and the EU the finger.

because Erdogan IS the elected head of the state. But seeing him slide towards islamist behavior means seeing him tossed may not be such a bad thing.
but the President HAS to state that he's backing him, because if he doesnt and the coup fails, working with Turkey becomes a WHOLE lot harder

He could have stayed out of it and seen where the coup went. Erdogan will not "avoid any violence or bloodshed" himself.
