Turkey reinstating death penalty would end EU talks: Germany
Source: AFP
Germany warned Turkey on Monday that if it reinstated the death penalty it would bring an end to accession talks with the European Union.
After President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in the wake of a failed coup attempt that Turkey would consider a return of capital punishment, Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman told reporters: "Introducing the death penalty in Turkey would mean the end of EU membership talks."
EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogeherini echoed those sentiments.
"Let me be very clear... no country can become an EU state if it introduces the death penalty," Mogherini said when asked about the possible impact on long-stalled accession talks with Ankara.

(16,423 posts)Turkey had national elections in 2015. Twice.
The first election, in May, ended with Erdogan as the victor, but he had suffered a loss of votes so his party no longer had the majority in parliament. Erdogan would have needed to form an alliance with some other party to get above the 51% threshold.
In such multi-party systems, it's customary that within a few days after the election, envoys are exchanged between parties for preliminary negotiations on who is willing to ally with whom.
Except Erdogan never launched the negotiation-process. Even though he desperately needed the cooperation of another party to form a government, he never got in touch with other parties.
Erdogan waited the whole thing out until another paragraph was triggered: If a government is not formed within X months, new elections are held.
And so Erdogan got a second election because he had sabotaged the first one. Because he didn't like that he was just the winner. He wanted to be the ultimate winner.
And what a COINCIDENCE: On the eve of the second election, an ISIS-bombing went off in an anti-Erdogan-demonstration in Ankara. Triggering with the voters the desire for a strongman who will protect them.

(24,329 posts)But it prevents them from being an EU member
They will have to choose
The cannot have both
Being a member of the EU is not a right
If Turkey chooses to do something that is prohibited to membership then they can't be a member

Plus, they've been a key transshipment point for heroin and money laundering hub for decades. Borderline rogue state.
