A Kansas City, Kan., police captain who was shot Tuesday afternoon has died, authorities announced at a press conference.

Capt. Robert Melton, a veteran who served in Afghanistan, was shot at 22nd and Haskell in Kansas City, Kan. and by 2:45 p.m. one person was in custody and police had detained another person.

When Melton arrived at the University of Kansas Hospital at 2:22 p.m. He had no heart rate and CPR was performed.

“Despite our best efforts, the officer was pronounced at 2:55 p.m.,” said trauma surgeon James Howard.

It feels terrible to say it but at least he died in the line of duty while trying to apprehend people in the midst of committing a crime rather than the way the officers in Dallas lost their lives.

I'm no big fan of cops in general, but not all of them are bad people. May Capt. Melton rest in peace.
