A large number of contested ballots have delayed the results of a vote to determine if Northwestern University adjuncts and nontenure-eligible faculty members will form a union.
A preliminary count of the mail-in ballots Tuesday showed 210 votes in favor of being represented by Service Employees International Union Local 73, and 146 against. Another 134 ballots were challenged, so they could swing the election, said Peter Sung Ohr, regional director of the National Labor Relations Board.
Ohr will have to decide whether a hearing is necessary to determine the eligibility of the challenged ballots.
In a news release, Northwestern University said "the vast majority" of the contested ballots were challenged by the SEIU.
