Turkey's Erdogan declares state of emergency after coup attempt

Source: AFP

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday declared a three-month state of emergency in Turkey in order to hunt down all those deemed to be behind an attempted coup.

The state of emergency was needed "in order to remove swiftly all the elements of the terrorist organisation involved in the coup attempt," he said at the presidential palace in Ankara.

Turkey has accused the group of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen of being behind the coup and acting as a terror group. Gulen vehemently denies the charge.

"The decision has been made to declare the state of emergency for a period of three months," he said at a news conference.

Color me extremely skeptical. I just hope the Turks are, also.

Ahmadinejad's powerbase was voters from the rural areas, but the people from urban areas didn't like him.

The cops? Erdogan is packing them with cronies.
Judges? Erdogan is packing them with cronies.
Attorney-generals? Erdogan is packing them with cronies.
Academics? Erdogan is packing them with cronies.
Generals? Erdogan is packing them with cronies.

And Erdogan had new law passed that removes legal immunities for sitting members of parliament.

In Germany, Erdogan already has the nick-name "The Dictator from the Bosporus" among cynics and comedians.
3 months from now, the joke will have become reality.

What's worse, it's a kleptocracy tinged with Islamist ideology.

I did not give credence to the theory that the coup was a fake organized by Erdogan himself to cloak a power grab.

I am now wavering on that appraisal.

If I were in Turkey, I'd be scared.

Erdogan has issued a diktat that "authorises" the hunting down of anyone deemed to be a threat.

Anyone who isn't worried by that action is pretty ignorant of history ...
