Turkey will temporarily suspend the European Convention on Human Rights

Source: Business Insider

Turkey will temporarily suspend the European Convention on Human rights as it implements a three-month state of emergency, the country's deputy prime minister said.

The emergency state was implemented following a failed coup last weekend during which over 250 were killed.

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Thursday that the state of emergency could end before the three months are up and may only last for one to one and a half month, according to broadcaster NTV.

Turkey will follow in the footsteps of France, which also opted out of some of the convention's aspects during an emergency state implemented in November 2015 after terrorist attacks in Paris killed 130 people.

UK must leave European convention on human rights, says Theresa May

Britain should withdraw from the European convention on human rights regardless of the EU referendum result, Theresa May has said, in comments that contradict ministers within her own government.

The shadow justice secretary, Charles Falconer, said he was appalled by the home secretary’s comments, which he described as “so ignorant, so illiberal, so misguided”, while the Tory MP and former attorney general Dominic Grieve said he was disappointed by the intervention.

If there was ever a point at which the German people should have taken to the streets to stop Hitler, it was in 1933 after their rights were "temporarily" suspended due to the suspicious Reichstag fire.

I am beginning to think the Turkish coup attempt was a Reichstsg fire.

of human rights have a way of lasting a long, long time.

What's more important to a conservative? The rights of people or the leader's own 'right' to rule?

it is not enough to just criticize others for being silent. I hope there is more going on behind the scenes at the Obama level than we are hearing about.

from the shrub administration

The US set the standard for this on a number of levels after 9/11

Torture, rendition, nato treaty, world court.

To name a few.

We set the standard for indecency.

And not holding our leaders accountable
