UK nuclear submarine damaged in 'glancing collision'

Source: CNN

A nuclear submarine was damaged Wednesday after it was involved in a "glancing collision" with a merchant vessel, the UK Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The sub suffered external damage, but "there is absolutely no damage to her nuclear plant," authorities said. No one was injured and the merchant vessel was not damaged, according to initial reports.

The collision between HMS Ambush, an Astute-class submarine, and the other ship happened while the submarine was submerged and conducting a training exercise.

HMS Vanguard and Le Triomphant submarine collision
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nuclear submarine HMS Vanguard arrives back at HM Naval Base Clyde, Faslane, Scotland following a patrol.

A Triomphant-class submarine (here, Vigilant)
The submarines HMS Vanguard and Triomphant collided in the Atlantic Ocean in the night between 3–4 February 2009. Both are nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. The Royal Navy's HMS Vanguard and the French Navy's Triomphant both sustained damage, but no injuries or radioactivity releases were reported.[1] At the time of the collision, both vessels were submerged and, according to the UK Ministry of Defence, moving "at very low speed"; both are equipped with active and passive sonar, although only the latter is used on an operational patrol.[2]

Two nuclear powered ballistic missile submarines colliding must certainly be considered a lower point.

Seriously though, as much fun as it is to mock incidents like this they do happen quite frequently. Wikipedia even has a list of submarine incidents! And its LONG.

I think colliding with the Isle of Skye wasn't a great day either.
