Bernie Sanders: 'I am proud to stand with her'
Source: CNN
Bernie Sanders on Monday empathized with his disappointed supporters, but told them firmly that Hillary Clinton must win in November.
* * *
The Vermont senator sought to unite Democrats on the opening night of their convention, even as primary season divides were exacerbated by a leak of emails showing party leaders sided against his campaign.
"I understand that many people here in this convention hall and around the country are disappointed about the final results of the nominating process," Sanders said. "I think it's fair to say that no one is more disappointed than I am. But to all of our supporters -- here and around the country -- I hope you take enormous pride in the historical accomplishments we have achieved."
But after a hard fought primary, he left no doubt about his position on the cusp of the general election. "Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding president," he said at the conclusion of his speech, "and I am proud to stand with her here tonight."

(314 posts)Sadly, it seems the Clinton side of the equation has its own group of extremists, who like the Bernie or Busters, are unwilling to move past the primaries. Let's stand with Hillary and Bernie and focus on beating Trump.

(12,530 posts)And yes, I can see the setup for a jury from a mile off. You forgot to factor in that I don't give a fuck.
He gave a stump speech and bragged about his campaign instead of bragging about Hillary. He didn't do a whole lot to explain Hillary's positions and plans. The best he did was say "she understands we need a living wage," that she understands climate change is real, etc. He never once said she had a plan to deal with these things, that she is a fighter who will work her heart out to accomplish these things. Unlike Michelle Obama, he never once said he trusts Hillary to work hard to get us these things.
Instead, he said he's "looking forward to" their "votes at roll call tomorrow night." How does that help unity? Hillary could have done that in 2008 and did not. In 2008, Hillary had a greater percentage of delegates than Bernie has now. But she showed statesmanship. She called for a vote by acclamation to nominate Obama. Sanders should do the same.

(314 posts)Did we watch the same speech? I thought it was excellent and a strong endorsement of Hillary. Aside from the behavior of a few crazy Bernie or Busters, I thought it was a unifying night. Very strong start to the convention, and all the speakers were excellent.

(51,378 posts)Bernie basically did his stump speech, punctuated with the line you quote. He could have done more to convince his followers that Hillary will be an outstanding president.

(16,039 posts)He sent texts and emails to his supporters to stop yesterday. He stood up there and shouted over them and talked about what makes America, our party, and his movement great. He tanked his supporters. AND THEN HE SAID WHAT HE BELIEVED TO MAKE OUR COUNTRY WORK FOR AMERICANS. It was more than one sentence. So if you missed all the rest, you are in no place to comment.
If you just want to continue to slam this great man, you are no better than the disrupters last night.
The rest of us are ready to work to get Clinton/Kaine elected.

(51,378 posts)I watched his whole speech. I have a tight to comment. I am not disrupting anyone's speech or bashing Democrats. It is very unfair to compare me to those asshole disrupters.
Sanders gave his stump speech, bragging about how he got "13 million votes..." Just ONCE I'd like him to point out that Hillary got 3.8 Million more votes than he did. Many of his followers think she stole the nomination. He needs to come out and say the truth, that Hillary won fair and square, that Hillary did not rig the primary, that she did not steal the nomination.
That stump speech is not what was needed last night. He did nothing to explain Hillary's positions and plans--after spending the last year saying they were awful or did not exist. The best he did was say "she understands we need a living wage," that she understands climate change is real, etc. He never once said she had a plan to get these things, that she is a fighter who will work her heart out to accomplish these goals. Unlike Michelle Obama, he never once said he trusts Hillary to work hard to get us these things. Surely he did not expect to convince his followers to support Hillary with that lackluster speech.
He needed to stop bragging about his campaign and to start bragging about Hillary. Instead, he says he's "looking forward to" his delegates' "votes at roll call tomorrow night." How does that help unity? Hillary could have done that in 2008 and did not. In 2008, Hillary had a greater percentage of delegates than Bernie has now. But she showed statesmanship. She did what was best for the country and the Democratic party. She called for a vote by acclamation to nominate Obama. Sanders should do the same for Hillary.
I am not bashing Bernie, I am giving constructive criticism of what he is doing so that he improves and helps get Hillary elected. He needs to get a lot better at campaigning for Hillary than what I saw last night. The stakes are too high.

(51,378 posts)He needs to talk about her accomplishments. He needs to talk about her plans. And he needs to talk about how she work her heart out to get us the things we all want. Otherwise, just punctuating a speech mostly about himself with the statement that she will be oustanding will not convince anyone who is not already convinced.

(26,087 posts)After all if he had tried to and got it wrong then she could be wasting alot of time having to correct it for months and that time could be better spent on explaining why Trump is not a good choice to pick as president.
SunSeeker
(51,378 posts)He just spent the last year suggesting she can't be trusted, that her judgment is so bad it disqualifies her from office. Now he expects her to convince his followers of anything?!
cstanleytech
(26,087 posts)should go a long way to mitigate anything he might have said or implied about her.
SunSeeker
(51,378 posts)He needs to affirmatively state why her plans are good.
And that he trusts Hillary to fight for those plans, like Michelle Obama said in her speech.

SunSeeker
(51,378 posts)Now I want her to win against Trump. Trump has been using Bernie's words against Hillary on the campaign trail. The most effective way to counteract that is by Bernie himself coming out and saying Hillary is the most qualified candidate out there, and talking up her plans, instead of talking about where they disagree.

"He was at the end of the night after the Hillary love fest".
One said she could possibly vote for Stein, even after hearing the impassioned speech her preferred candidate just made.
Too many seem to be one vote issues (TTP). Yes, Hillary may have been a supporter of it, but one of the main reasons was because as Secretary of State, when your boss the President of the United States) asks you to do and fight for something, you'e more than likely going to do it.
Too many people seem to not be focusing on the overall big picture, and that's disappointing.
I hope people wake up before November.

(1,574 posts)As I stated in a earlier post idealism is not a substitute for pragmatism and common sense. A vote for Stein in a swing state is helping Trump. Trump must NOT win.

(6,855 posts)Bernie's ego is no less formidable than Hillary's. I think both can take away a lot of lessons from the campaign. The electorate felt that Hillary is more prepared for the job. And she worked harder for it, for longer.
Bernie understands that the Left needs the Democrats, and Hillary understands that the Democrats need the Left.
