Backlash For Trump After He Lashes Out At The Muslim Parents Of A Dead U.S. Soldier

Source: Washington Post

By Jose A. DelReal and Anne Gearan July 30 at 6:50 PM

Republican Donald Trump lashed out Saturday at two Muslim American parents who lost their son while he served in the U.S. military in Iraq and who appeared at the Democratic National Convention last week, stirring outrage among critics who said the episode proves that Trump lacks the compassion and temperament to be president.

Asked to comment on the convention speech of Khizr Khan, a Pakistani immigrant whose son, Army Capt. Humayun Khan, died in Iraq in 2004, Trump described Khan as “very emotional” and said he “probably looked like a nice guy to me” — then accused him of being controlled by the Clinton campaign.

“Who wrote that? Did Hillary’s script writers write it?” he asked in an interview with ABC.

Trump also questioned why Khan’s wife, Ghazala, did not speak on stage, despite the fact that she sat for an interview with MSNBC the following day.

Although only the latest instance in which Trump has attacked a convention speaker, the Republican nominee’s remarks drew strong rebukes Saturday — but only silence from several senior GOP leaders, including House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the vice-presidential nominee, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

“Trump’s slur against Captain Khan’s mother is, even for him, beyond the pale,” tweeted John Weaver, a Republican strategist for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. “He has NO redeeming qualities.”

If he or anyone from his "campaign" had listened to the interview the parents gave to Lawrence O'Donnell yesterday, they'd know why Khan's wife didn't speak. She was too emotional to, plain and simple. How dare he question those patriots' motives? He thought Hillary speech writers wrote Mr. Khan's speech????

Geez, he makes me furious

1) He went after the military (Trump went after a dead soldier and McCarthy, the institution),

and

2) He went after an innocent young man, almost for sport.

His other father, Roy Cohn, wasn't here to warn him.

Hope Trump is condemned and then forgotten like McCarthy.

Trump in hot water over comments about Muslim father's convention speech

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has come under fire for comments about the mother of a Muslim US Army soldier killed in Iraq. Trump's remarks have drawn criticism from Hillary Clinton and leading Democrats.

Date 31.07.2016

Donald Trump stirred up more controversy on Saturday over comments about the mother of a decorated Muslim US Army captain killed in Iraq, defending himself against accusations from the soldier's father that he had never sacrificed anything.

Pakistani-American lawyer Khizr Khan gave a moving speech at the Democratic convention on Thursday that criticized Trump's anti-Muslim, anti-minority and anti-women comments. He was flanked by his wife Ghazala Khan, who wore a headscarf and chose not to speak.

Their son, Captain Humayun Khan, was killed by a bomb in Iraq in 2004, and was later honored with a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

"If you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. You tell me," Trump said, in an interview with ABC's "This Week." The comments were taken on social media to mean that as a female Muslim she wasn't allowed to speak.

When "the Muslims" go from being these almost alien foreigners with strange beliefs and customs far away on the other side of the world to being, you know, your neighbors and friends, then your agenda of making them the former will fail.
