Interim DNC chair to impose 'tough standards' after email leaks

Source: TheHill.com

Interim chair of the Democratic National Committee Donna Brazile said she would impose tougher standards on staff going forward after email leaks showed some party leaders plotted to undermine the insurgent campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Specifically, she expressed disgust with an email from DNC CFO Brad Marshall in which outlined a plan to question Sanders's religion.

"When I read Brad's email, and I've known Brad now for 20 years, I called him, and I said 'Brad, that was wrong. That's inappropriate.' I apologized to the Sanders people immediately on Saturday morning," Brazile said in an interview with Katie Couric Thursday.

She said she was "disgusted" and "outraged" by some of the emails.

Harry Reid On Bernie And The DNC: ‘Everybody Knew That This Was Not A Fair Deal’

By Ryan Grim - 07/27/2016 05:52 pm ET

PHILADELPHIA ― Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the outgoing Democratic National Committee chair, didn’t treat Sen. Bernie Sanders fairly during the primaries and should have resigned sooner.

Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, made his comments in response to a question about whether his party had a Plan B if something truly disqualifying emerged about Hillary Clinton in future email dumps.

“No,” he told The Huffington Post, but went on to talk about the DNC communications released so far in what appears to be a Russian-orchestrated hack.

“Debbie Wasserman Schultz, she’s always been good to me. I like her just fine,” Reid said. “I know she’s tried hard, but as some people probably know, I thought Bernie deserved somebody that was not critical to[ward] him. I knew ― everybody knew ― that this was not a fair deal. So I’m sorry she had to resign, but it was the right thing to do. She just should’ve done it sooner.”...

The Democratic Party's job is to elect democrats. It's not absurd to think they would have opposition research on a guy who, up until last year, wasn't a Democrat.

Bigots shouldn't hold top positions in a party that makes opposition to bigotry a central part of its identity, especially as it heads into a campaign against an ugly bigot.

I have no information to indicate that DNC is investigating this or intends to take any action on this whatsoever. If not, that is unfortunate, in my opinion.

That strikes me as bullshit. He regrets that some people were embarrassed - he did not express regret for sending the email itself."

anyway., so here's more from that thread:

...The comments expressed do not reflect my beliefs nor do they reflect the beliefs of the DNC and its employees. I apologize to those I offended."

He didn't even bother to express regret for sending the email. He expressed regret that some people are now embarrassed.

And regardless, I think that he send such a bigoted email in the first place should disqualify him from his position. Of course, the DNC can make its choice on that.

This kind of pseudo apology is what we've come to expect from Republicans caught up in scandals and foot-in-mouth situations, not our party leaders.

You're right--it's a classic Republican non-apology, but then appealing to religious bigotry is a classic Republican strategy, so it makes sense in a way.
