Thousands of pro-Erdogan protesters to rally in Cologne

Source: Deutsche Welle

Extra police have been deployed in the western German city Cologne ahead of a protest that's expected to draw up to 30,000 supporters of Turkish President Erdogan. Several counter-demonstrations have also been planned.

Authorities said some 2,700 officers, including Turkish speakers, would be stationed in the city center to head off any clashes between opposing groups.

"One thing I want to make clear is that we will intervene against any kind of violence quickly, decisively and forcefully," Cologne's police chief Jürgen Mathies said.

The Union of European-Turkish Democrats (UETD) called Sunday's demonstration to protest against a failed coup, staged by a section of Turkey's military on July 15, that left more than 250 people dead.

was supposed to speak at this conference via video; however a German court has put the kibosh on that and it's not unfair to suggest that Erdogan is probably livid.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from addressing via video call a planned anti-coup rally in Cologne.

The decision by the Federal Constitutional Court came after Cologne police prevented the rally organizers from inviting the president to give a speech to thousands of supporters expected to gather for Sunday's rally in Deutzer Werft to protest the July 15 coup attempt of Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ) linked soldiers in Turkey, which left more than 260 people dead.

Turkey's Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalın said that Germany's decision to block the video conference was unacceptable and said he hoped the German authorities will have a satisfactory explanation for the decision.
