Oil pipeline protest turns violent in southern North Dakota

James Macpherson, Associated Press

Updated 12:31 am, Sunday, September 4, 2016

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A protest of a four-state, $3.8 billion oil pipeline turned violent Saturday after tribal officials say construction crews destroyed American Indian burial and cultural sites on private land in southern North Dakota.

Morton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donnell Preskey said four private security guards and two guard dogs were injured after several hundred protesters confronted construction crews Saturday afternoon at the site just outside the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. One of the security officers was taken to a Bismarck hospital for undisclosed injuries. The two guard dogs were taken to a Bismarck veterinary clinic, Preskey said.

Tribe spokesman Steve Sitting Bear said protesters reported that six people had been bitten by security dogs, including a young child. At least 30 people were pepper-sprayed, he said. Preskey said law enforcement authorities had no reports of protesters being injured.

There were no law enforcement personnel at the site when the incident occurred, Preskey said. The crowd disbursed when officers arrived and no one was arrested, she said.

them turn their dogs on the protesters and pepper spray them, and physically assaulting the people.

So damned dirty. The corporation hires violent buffoons to go harm human beings. This has been happening for centuries, and it doesn't seem to have changed a bit after we started thinking of ourselves as "civilized" and "Number One!" or the "Shining City on the ####ing Hill."

The company behind this filthy activity is Dakota Access LLC. I'd like to find out more about that bunch of monsters later.

Here's something I did spot:

Senator Promoting Dakota Access Pipeline Invests In Bakken Oil Wells Named After Indian Tribe

By Steve Horn • Thursday, September 1, 2016 - 14:11

U.S. Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) recently came out in support of the Dakota Access pipeline, the hotly contested Energy Transfer Partners-owned pipeline envisioned to move oil obtained via hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) from North Dakota's Bakken Shale basin. As the pipeline transports oil across North and South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois, it will cross farms, natural areas, and perhaps most notably, ancestral lands of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, which is one of several tribes disagreeing with Sen. Hoeven's assessment that this pipeline is “infrastructure we need.”

What Sen. Hoeven — an outspoken supporter of TransCanada's Keystone XL tar sands pipeline — did not mention, however, is his personal investment in 68 different oil-producing wells in North Dakota under the auspices of the company Mainstream Investors, LLC according to his most recent congressional personal financial disclosure form.

Seventeen of those wells are owned by Continental Resources, the company whose CEO Harold Hamm also serves as a campaign energy adviser to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Those wells have a value of between $11,000–$171,000, and 14 of them, named Wahpeton, are located within 18 miles of the Dakota Access Watford City terminal site.

In a twist of irony, Wahpeton is part of the namesake of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe, whose reservation sits in southeast North Dakota and northeast South Dakota. The tribe passed a resolution in 2014 in opposition to the building of the Dakota Access pipeline.

. . .

Hoeven is a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, where he has the responsibility to ensure tribal concerns are heard and adequately addressed. However, not all of his constituents feel he is living up to this role.

And the gop controlled officials have 'no reports' of protestors getting hurt. Because, obviously, they're not monitoring the native organizations or paying attention to those groups' media outreach efforts.

From the article, it would appear to have been a "spontaneous" eruption of violence. Yeah.

No law enforcement on site, eh? Isn't that convenient? Kind of like the colonel saying "I don't want to see any looting" and then adding, "Okay, I'm off for my nap now."

invited tribal representative onto his land a few days ago to do a survey for what we call 'cultural properties'. these representatives found many many cultural sites, graves and effigies in the path of the pipeline. this information was filed as part of documentation regarding Standing Rocks case for an injunction against the corp of engineers and energy transfer to stop construction until other court cases are heard and ruled upon. energy transfer (with the tacit agreement of local law enforcement) then skipped over 10 miles of the right of way to rush in and destroy these sites before protection could be extended to them. some of these sites meet the criterion for inclusion into the National Historic Registry...

Tribal chairman warns of traveling to Bismarck-Mandan area
BLAIR EMERSON Bismarck Tribune Updated 2 hrs ago

Chairman Harold Frazier said in a news release that many of his tribal members were pepper sprayed by the security officers and attacked by dogs after they went onto a construction site Saturday afternoon.

"I am calling on all members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe to avoid traveling to or doing business in the Mandan-Bismarck area until this crisis is resolved," Frazier said. "I fear for my people's safety."

Donnell Preskey, spokeswoman for the Morton County Sheriff's Office, said no one was arrested after the incident that occurred Saturday, and the sheriff's department and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating it.

"We are working with law enforcement to ensure that all offenders are arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Vicki Granado, spokeswoman for Energy Transfer Partners, the company in charge of the Dakota Access Pipeline, said in a statement.

That such an inaccurate article has been syndicated and might be the first reporting on this situation that many people read.

There is no mention in the article that a reporter from Democracy Now was on the ground there and can verify both verbally and with video how the attacks actually occurred.

Instead the author includes purposefully misleading statements from biased authorities.

The sloppiness in small matters such as editing is compounded by the sloppiness in taking statements at face value when both could and should have been double checked and verified.
