Philippine president to Obama: don’t ask about killings or ‘I will swear at you’

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte warned President Barack Obama on Monday not to question him about extrajudicial killings, or “son of a bitch I will swear at you” when they meet in Laos during a regional summit.

Duterte said before flying to Laos that he is a leader of a sovereign country and is answerable only to the Filipino people. He was answering a reporter’s question about how he intends to explain the extrajudicial killings to Obama. More than 2,000 suspected drug pushers and users have been killed since Duterte launched a war on drugs after taking office on June 30.

In his typical foul-mouthed style, Duterte responded: “I am a president of a sovereign state and we have long ceased to be a colony. I do not have any master except the Filipino people, nobody but nobody. You must be respectful. Do not just throw questions. Putang ina I will swear at you in that forum,” he said, using the Tagalog phrase for son of a bitch.

Obama says he’s asked staff to see if meeting with Philippine president would still be ‘productive’.

and call in their debt
See how Mr. Sovereign Nation likes that
He keeps threatening to form a coalition with China and African Nations
I'm sure China would agree. He'd just have to cede all that territorial waters the Chinese claim as theirs

Curious if the DUer who likes this guy and finds him to be a wonderful, caring guy will come to his defense

5. US Military Forces Return to Philippines In 10-Year Deal

Sep 2016

KUALA LUMPUR - The U.S. has reached an agreement with the Philippines for an expanded American military presence, more than 20 years after forces stationed at bases there were pushed out.

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes announced the 10-year deal - an Enhanced Defense Cooperation agreement - in a briefing with reporters today. He said the arrangement serves the national interest and underscores a "historic commitment to the Pacific."

When it is signed ahead of President Obama's arrival in Manila on Monday, it will broaden U.S. access to bases in the Philippines on a rotational, temporary basis, officials said. The deal will allow the Pentagon to move fighter jets and ships in the area, making the U.S. a more present and capable partner in the region.

U.S. announces ramped-up military presence in Philippines

U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Thursday that U.S. troops and military equipment would be sent on regular rotations in the Philippines and that the two countries had started joint patrols in the South China Sea as China increasingly asserts its territorial claims.

The initiatives are designed so that the United States does not increase its permanent footprint in its former colony, but they demonstrate that the two countries are increasing security cooperation amid joint concerns over China's actions in the region's disputed waterways.

Countries across the region have expressed concern over China's activities, but the broader American military presence was not meant to provoke conflict with the Chinese, Carter said.

"There will be a regular, periodic presence here of American forces," Carter said at a news briefing in Manila with Philippine Defence Minister Voltaire Gazmin. "The things that we're doing here are part of a pattern that goes back decades. They're by the invitation of an alliance partner."

They see places nearby like Singapore and how they do well for business and security and want to move in that direction. Money is power and in a country where most people are poor and without work the drug dealers with the money call the shots for everything. They voted Duterte because he cleaned up his city of Davao. They know the hard work will never benefit the regular citizens if the country isn't cleaned up. When > 90% of politicians are owned by drug lords their only choice was Duterte.

The largest source of K1 (marriage) visas is from the Philippines. They have whole families literally depending on daughters going to the US and marrying old retired Americans to send money back home.
